More Great Cover Songs.... Are They Better Than The Originals?

Do you like the covers better? You decide.....
I've compiled a list of some notable cover songs that I like, focusing on the 90's and 00's.
Hoping that you discover something new and unexpected!.
Baker Street Foo Fighters (Gerry Rafferty)
Named after a famous street in London, Baker Street was a hit for Gerry Rafferty in 1978.
The Foo Fighters released this version as a B-side to their 1998 single My Hero. The sax solo from the original is replaced with guitar, and the word booze changed to crack.
I Will Survive Cake (Gloria Gaynor)
Cake, a popular indie band from Sacramento, covered Gloria Gaynor's Grammy-winning single on their second studio album, Fashion Nugget.
Nobody Does It Better Radiohead (Carly Simon)
Music written by Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager. Originally recorded by Carly Simon for the James Bond Film The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. Thom Yorke of Radiohead reportedly called this "the sexiest song ever written."
Wonderwall Ryan Adams (Oasis)
Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis released the CD What's The Story, Morning Glory? in '95, with Wonderwall being the biggest US hit. In fact, the album was the second-best selling in British history, second only to Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'.
"The eerie echoes of Adams' cover of the Oasis classic give way to
ringing, plucked chords sprawling across the rich landscape. At first
smooth and effortless, his voice becomes more plaintive as it floats
over the shifting acoustics; ebbing, flowing and finally breaking
before the gliding piano line lifts you through misty spheres of sky
and cloud, melancholic and adrift. And no, I have not been taking drugs." Lauren Strain leedsmusicscene.net
The Boys of Summer The Ataris (Don Henley)
Ataris is a pop-funk band from Indiana. They replaced the original lyric "Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac", referring to the Grateful Dead, with "Blackflag sticker", in homage to the 80's punk band.
Imagine A Perfect Circle (John Lennon)
A Perfect Circle's band members have formerly hailed from such acts as Tool, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumkins, Queens of the Stone Age, and Nine Inch Nails. This version of John Lennon's "Imagine" turns the idealism of the original on it's head.
Personal Jesus Johnny Cash (Depeche Mode)
Released in 2002 on the amazing recording Cash IV, The Man Comes Around.
"In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and
destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and
hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his
baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty.
By the time he gets to the Beatles "In My Life," you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. --Alanna Nash

Hit Me Baby One More Time Travis (Britney Spears)
You gotta like this version more. Seriously.
Jolene The White Stripes (Dolly Parton)
The original was written and performed by Dolly Parton in 1973. The title character, 'Jolene' was inspired by a statuesque red-headed bank teller who flirted with her husband. I have a feeling that Dolly could have kicked her ass.
As for Jack White of The White Stripes, in my opinion, he is one of the most versatile, passionate and talented performers of our time.
Mrs Robinson The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel)
Written by Paul Simon and first performed by Simon and Garfunkel, this song is best known for the motion picture 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman as a mopish recent college graduate, and Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson. The Lemonheads re-released their album 'Its a Shame About Ray' to include this cover after the single's success on the charts.
Superstar Sonic Youth (The Carpenters)
A haunting (ok, kind of creepy) cover by Sonic Youth, appearing on 'If I Were a Carpenter', a tribute album released in '94, as well as the 'Juno' movie soundtrack. This song was actually written by Leon Russell, and was first performed by Joe Cocker while on his 'Mad Dogs & Englishmen' tour.
Well, that's a short sampling of some more recent covers of mostly older songs.
Your remarks and input are most welcome.

A cover song doesn't have to be better than the original to be really great. A really great cover song makes you listen with a new ear. You will find yourself re-connecting with the music and lyrics all...

thanks blue dog. I think that the best song covers bring a a different perspective to a song, and I often appreciate the original even more!
I can't imagine anyone doing a Carpenters cover and making it sound better! :)
Feline... not sure if it's better, but I like it!
thanks for your comment!
Don't mind me...I'm terribly biased about the Carpenters. I even have the temerity to say that they do Beatles songs better than the legends themselves! :P
what a lot of work. i enjoyed listening to personal Jesus again.
its ok, FP, the Carpenters have a special place in my heart too!
The band Cracker did a really Interesting version of " Superstar " as well .
thanks Tony, I'm going to check that out!
and if I have enough suggestions to make a new hub, it will be included :)
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
The best cover of all times - even Bob Dylan likes it
I'll add it to the list, Jupiter, thanks!
What an awesome hub! I'm jealous that I didn't think of it first! You did an excellent job on this, thank you for sharing this with all of us, elisabethkcmo!
Oh and by the way If I may Interject one more selection ,"The Hurt " was covered by Johnny Cash and totally blows away the Nine Inch Nails version which was excellent too !
It took awhile to put it all together, but I enjoyed working on this hub.. learned some new things, too
glad that you enjoyed it, and thank you so much for your words of encouragement, dohn121 !
Good hub but the whole thing is too subjective for reasoned argument. Got to agree "All along the watchtower" by Hendrix is one of the finest covers. And I love "hit me baby" by Travis.
I understand your point, KevCC. I did say these were songs that I like, so I guess it is subjective.
I also value other's opinions, and I thank you for including the songs that you prefer!
Some very good cover versions here - although I must say that for me Wonderwall was greatest when Oasis did it!
True, BristolBoy, you can't beat the original, but I do think that Ryan Adams' version presents a different perspective..
appreciate your input!
My favorite cover is "Africa" by Howie Day. Blows the original out of the water. Search for it on youtube.
Thanks Lauren, I'll do that!
Hello, this is Kosmo from East of Eden. Ha! I really like this hub. I'm also a rockphile, as I think you've figured out. My favorite "recent" cover is Marilyn Manson's version of "Tainted Love." Can't get enough of that, can we? Later!
Kosmo, thakns for the suggestion! I will check that song out, and add it to the list, I just need more suggestions so I can do a "readers choice" hub!
Thought provoking Hub
Some good bands, there - I see that you mentioned the great Johnny Cash. The Personal Jesus cover is good, but the cover of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt is superb - even Trent Reznor admitted it!
The best cover of all time: Rolf Harris covering 'Stairway to Heaven.' Genius :D
Look forward to reading more of your Hubs :)
Great hub! I really liked the cover of "Mrs. Robinson" by the Lemonheads--and that's from a big fan of Simon and Garfunkel, lol...
One of my favorite covers is "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", by Guns-n-Roses--I love Dylan's version, but to me, this is even better!
And one more addition . Def Leppard did a very respectable version of " No matter what you are " originally done by Badfinger .
LOVE this! We deff share the same musical aesthetic!
I feel the same way about Jack White. Lenny Kravitz ranks right up there in my book, too (and he's done his share of covers as well -- didn't he do American Woman from the Guess Who?).
As for CAKE-- they are one of my top, top bands evah. LOVE them. And LOVE their version of I Will Survive. I have it on one of my hubs -- I think the one about cancer survival songs.
GREAT JOB, Elisabeth. MM
P.S. My cover vote goes to Stevie Ray Vaughn's Voodoo Chile (with an 'e') cover of the Hendrix classic Voodoo Child.
Although the original is pretty rockin' too. MM
Sufidreamer I agree, Johnny Cash does an amazing version of 'Hurt' thanks for the Rolf Harris suggestion, I am going to check that out..
TamCor We have alot of the same taste in music--I included Guns N Roses on another hub about covers , they do a great job at covering that song
Tony- Never heard the Def Leppard cover, thanks for the suggestion!
MightMom- it's funny how we like the same stuff, thanks for some songs to add to my list!
Thanks so much for all your input and suggestions, I'm compiling a great list for a new hub!

hi elisabeth,
well, i have mixed feelings about covers. of course, they're like any other medium, it's totally subjective. but in my eyes, it would definitely be difficult to cover imagine, or boys of summer, or mrs. robinson.
anyhow, great job!!
