Georgia Hit Early By Softball Sized Hail

Coweta county Georgia and area towns were hit hard on February 18th 2009. This is some of the biggest hail I have seen in my 20 years of doing storm related repairs.

Effected towns are:

  • Newnan
  • Tyrone
  • Palmetto
  • Fayetteville
  • Sharpsberg
  • Carrollton
  • Union City

I plotted out the largest reports of hail on a map using the GPS coordinates provided from NOAA. The storm area hardest hit is approximately 268 square miles.

The ground actually has holes from the impact of the hail! This is surreal to say the least!

In a matter of a few minutes business's and homes alike sustained many thousands of dollars in damage from this storm. I've personally been out to asses the damage and found the following areas damaged on homes.

  • Roofing all types.
  • Siding, all types.
  • Gutters
  • Stucco or Dryved
  • Painting
  • Metal Dormers
  • Metal Garage Doors
  • Metal Exterior Doors
  • Windows, shattered
  • Decks
  • Shutters, all types.
  • Yards

Any vehicles that happened to be out sustained enough damage to be totaled and I've seen boats that where obliterated as well!

Initial estimates of the loss for insurance company's are 10 Million but I susupect that is undervalued. As the season progresses and property owners realize that storm damage is covered they will begin to realize they should file claims.

Is Global Warming causing severe storm earlier in the year now?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Not enough evidence to say either way.
