Healing Properties of the Cranberry
With up to 60% of the female population suffering from urinary tract infections at some point in their lives, researchers have found that the natural healing powers of the humble cranberry can help to prevent the awful pain and the embarrassment of cystitis. Men and women both suffer from UTI's, although women more commonly tend to be prone to picking up these urinary infections and quite often, some women suffer from recurring infections throughout their lives. Those mostly affected appear to be women in the 25-39 age group and those over the age of 55.
An enjoyable drink in its own right, although best served chilled, cranberry juice is a great source of vitamin C, A, Fibre and Potassium and also includes Bioflavanoids which help to repair molecules which are formed when the body uses up oxygen. Cranberry juice has been found to also contain natural antibiotic ingredients. These days researchers are discovering that the berry, which was always previously used in treating UTI's prior to antibiotics, is now making a remarkable comeback as more and more people are considering the natural approach to life, reluctant to rely solely on antibiotics or other conventional medicines. Whilst antibiotics are still traditionally prescribed for UTI's, Cranberry juice can be considered a useful preventative measure.
The cranberry is native to North America and closely related to the blueberry but it also contains a powerful antioxidant that may offer some protection against harmful free radicals.
What The Scientists Say...
Scientists have suggested that to achieve maximum benefit of all of the natural properties of the cranberry, it is best to drink cranberry juice every day and anything between 1 and 3 glasses of cranberry juice is of most benefit. Reducing caffeinated drinks and replacing them with cranberry juice is a good preventative treatment.
- According to a Harvard Research Study, those who drink cranberry juice regularly, have a 42% decrease in the possibility of picking up an infection of the bladder.
Use of Antibiotics
Continued use of Antibiotics is not to be recommended as it also kills off ‘good' bacteria. Always remember to top up your immune system by increasing your vitamin c levels and by using Echinacea if you really have to have Antibiotics.
Stress
The stress associated with UTI's can be quite acute as it is a painful, embarrassing condition. The sufferer can alleviate some of the stress by incorporating both regular and healing meditations into their lives.
