How to Create a Job out of Thin Air
The job market is extremely difficult these days because of the economy. So when you think to apply for a job, you may be discouraged knowing that the unemployment rate is at its highest point ever.
So I want to share with you two unbelievably simple way to create a job out of thin air. Now this is not going to work like pronto in every industry; but you can certainly make this work in many industries.
Let’s face it; if you are 5 feet and 100 pounds you are not going to just walk into a general managers office of a NBA ball club and create the new age center position for yourself. But you can find yourself comfortably doing whatever you like for the pay you can deal with and even love.
So how do you create a job out of thin air? First thing you should do is to sell yourself based on the industry you are in. If you’ve been laid off or downsized, in this economy it is not necessarily because you were an under achiever or performer (only you know that). It probably rests heavily on the fact that the company you worked for is trying to save money.
So for them to save money they had to get rid of employees. You just fell into the bunch because you are an… employee. So you should research the industry and see if the industry is losing fire or if it is strictly an economy slow down that is causing the company to want to save money.
For example, if you are in the VOIP industry, research to see if VOIP is slowing down overall or if it is purely a result of the slowed economy. If it is the industry, then leave it alone, if not then you can find work with another company.
Sell yourself! Write individualized letters to the HR, or managers and convey to them why you being part of their team is vitally important to them and the company. A personalized letter will go much further than a cover letter and a resume.
Just think about how it makes you stand out above the crowd of people who sent in cover letters and resumes? If they do not have a position open for you, create it and list the benefits of the position to the manager and have them hire you to fill it. When they see the benefits, they will know you are a go-getter, and will take interest.
The second thing you can do and instantly create a job is to quickly learn a skill and ‘skate on it’. A few years back when I got out of college I was in a field that does not pay well at all. After being fed up with that field, I went to the local bookstore and sat around reading how to books at the Barnes and Nobles.
I picked up a book brilliantly written on how to do Google Adwords. I learned it and did it for myself and applied for a job within the industry for a huge company and was paid double than the job I had in the field I went to college for. Let’s do the math: four years schooling okay pay, or one month of reading and implementing and doubling your pay. It’s a no brainer.
The bookstores are loaded with books from industry leaders in every field of employment. Simply read the best one, learn the skill, test it out for yourself, and then apply to do it for others. These authors often give more of the skinny on the industry that will also make you stand apart when it comes to applying for a job at the company.
Take advantage of the knowledge that is stored up in bookstores and libraries all across the world.
