Create and Use Chart Templates in Excel
65Do you find yourself re-creating charts in Excel or copy-pasting the same old chart and then having to delete all of the old data each time you need to make a new chart? If so, I have the quick and dirty solution for you: Chart Templates. This is a simple task that will save you loads of time and effort in the future! You can then reuse and even share your template with others. Here's how you can save your active Excel chart as a template:
- On the Chart Tools Design tab, under the Type section -> Click Save as Template
- In the Save Chart Template dialog box -> Type a name for your new chart type -> Click Save
That's all folks! You are all done creating your template. Now to the even better part: How to create a chart based on the template:
- On the Insert tab in the lower-right corner of the Charts section -> Click the dialog box launch icon to open the Insert Chart dialog box
- Click Templates to access your saved custom chart types
[FYI: Each chart template is saved as an individual file that you can copy and share]
Also, FYI: Saved chart templates are located in your Microsoft Office User Templates folder, inside a sub-folder named Charts.
To locate your User Templates folder:
- Click the Office button -> Click Excel Options
- Click the Trust Center tab -> Click Trust Center Settings
- In the Trust Center dialog box, on the Trusted Locations tab -> Double-Click the entry Excel 2007 default location: User Templates to view the full file path

Great Tutorial. A lot of users don’t have the slightest idea how to use chart templates in Excel. This tutorial explains it very clearly. For creating charts online, I use chartgo.com : graph or the National Center for Education websiteTheir are dozens of different sites out there. Do a search and you'll find a lot of good ones. Since the next release of Office will be online, perhaps we'll be able to use Excel online to create charts in the near future.
