Camping:Create your own bush Hot Water system
71A Hot Water system in operation
Make your own Hot-Water system for Camping
You can use a good stainless steel barrel as this will not rust. Alternatively buy an old reject beer keg to make this hot water system.
Directions: Cut the top off the keg and turn upside down on top of base. Weld a tube into the center long enough to reach nearly down to the base of container, when it sits on top of base.
The diagram on the right shows the water in the heater. Place this container over or near hot coals to heat up. When you want some hot water, slowly, pour cold water into the top. This will cause the hot water to overflow into the waiting bucket under the spout.
CAUTION: Be responsible, never leave any open fires, unattended, while in the bush. No one wants to be the cause of starting a bush fire.

Cooking in Camp Oven
This is the best way for cooking and catering for larger numbers of people while in the bush.
All in the pot Bush Stew (enough for 4)
Ingredients:
2 Onions, and Garlic
4 medium Potatoes
2 carrots
500 grams of Chuck Steak or gravy beef.
Pepper and salt and hot sauce or chili sauce depending on taste
Capsicum or choice of greens
Small amount of plain flour
Sufficient water to cover meat
Directions:
Place plain flour, salt, and pepper into plastic bag. Tip in the diced meat; while holding top of bag closed, shake to cover evenly with flour. Heat Camper oven, add sml quantity of oil then place the meat in, and brown it, to seal juices. Add vegetables, water and season to taste. Cook over low heat on hot coals. Now sit down, eat and enjoy with a cold tinny of beer or a bottle of wine.

Just Rodney, thanks for that. I was impressed when I saw how the heater works, yet so simple to make.
Amazing how simple things can make life a lot more bearable at abush camp.
you are so right. thank Rodney
very useful.....
Eileen, I have used both of these methods with great sucess. I actually have the same dutch oven that is pictured, it was my great grandmothers, She would roll over if she knew how many camp fires it has hung over!
It's actually a Griswald
Gawn fishing, thats great we have used the camp oven a few times, not sure what brand it is though and raining too hard to go outside to look. But they are really great. We have cooked goat and kangaroo in one that we had in kalgoorlie.
When we cooked the kangaroo we told our visitors it was lamb and to be honest they didnt know any different. After they had finished we told them it was kangaroo and they nearly spewed. See it is just mind over matter, if you do not know then you cannot tell the dif. Especially when cooked in a glad bag to keep the moisture in. That gives me an idea for another hub.
You can cook a kangaroo? I didn't know they could be hunted. Anyway, great article, going camping again and trying to get a meal plan together so maybe I'll make some stew. No kangaroos in the deep woods of the north though. Maybe bear?? lol. I'll lure it with a stick of gum and wrestle it down with my bootlaces.
beuller's way. Great one thanks for the laugh. Yes kangaroo is a specialty in some restaraunts nowa days. If cooked right you cannot tell the difference from lamb. Not sure what a bear would taste like. We should ask the lions maybe or whoever eats them. Thanks for stopping by
