For many, the idea of applying for credit cards after bankruptcy may seem like a scary or risky idea. The fact remains however, that for most individuals, credit cards are a necessary asset in order to perform basic and essential tasks. Credit cards are necessary to make certain online purchases or orders, for renting cars, for booking flights or hotels, and sometimes are even required for filing purposes until personal checks have cleared. So, how does an individual go about finding and obtaining the best credit card after bankruptcy, without falling into another risky financial situation?

The biggest challenge in finding for a credit card after bankruptcy is often the task of convincing a bank or credit card company to issue you a new card, given your poor credit rating. You may have had extenuating circumstances, such as health issues or family circumstances that caused you to have to file for bankruptcy, but financial institutions will only look at the figures, and will rarely take your personal situation into consideration. Banks that issue credit cards after bankruptcy see themselves as taking a higher risk with their clients, and will therefore closely evaluate your situation and then make a recommendation for the type of card that they think will be most appropriate.

Terms that will often be encountered include unsecured and secured credit cards. It is important to understand the implications of these terms, and how they will affect your situation. Secured credit cards after bankruptcy are a popular option that help people with poor credit ratings re-establish their relationship with their bank, while developing wise spending habits. They are not issued by all financial institutions, and the conditions will vary from one institution to the next. The basic principle behind a secured credit card is that you will make a cash deposit, and the spending limit on the card will either be equal to the deposit amount, or a small percentage above that amount. This method ensures that you do not spend more money than you have, and the small amount that is credit is easily paid back in the allotted amount of time.

An unsecured credit card after bankruptcy functions similarly to a regular credit card. The difference may be a higher fee and higher interest rates, in order to discourage the credit card holder from spending excessive amounts of money that they may not be able to pay back.

Regardless of whether you choose to have a secured or unsecured card, credit cards after bankruptcy are a tricky business. It is extremely important that applicants read all of the small print on the contract, in order to ensure that the financial institution is not taking unfair advantage of compromised credit situations. The best credit cards after bankruptcy will not require application fees, and will work with the credit card holder to re-establish their credit rating, while learning and developing healthier spending habits. Be aware of hidden monthly fees or insurance policies that will only add to the monthly credit card balance. Remember: The goal of a new credit card is to facilitate activities that would otherwise be impossible, and not to resume unmanageable spending habits.

Applying for credit cards after bankruptcy can be an arduous process, but remember that with a little bit of extra time and energy, you are likely to find a card that better suits your needs, without starting a new cycle of unmanageable debt.

NASHVILLE — Some of the debtors sitting forlornly in this city's old stone bankruptcy court have lost a job or gotten divorced. Others have been summoned to face their creditors because they spent mindlessly beyond their means. But all too often these days, they are there merely because they, or their children, got sick.
