Credit Problems? Can Credit Problems Be Solved?

Credit is a part of modern living. This was perhaps not always so, ie., paying things on credit was once considered a necessary evil at times rather than an automatice part of everyday life. Credit and credit that accrues interest is not considered ethical in some cultures (Islam, strictly speaking in all traditions that derive from the Hebrew Bible, arguably, at least...).

Credit problems can of course provide headaches and stress. Getting credit when you need to is a pressing issue for anyone who wants to buy a house, or rent a car, and though there are alternatives to credit, these mechanisms are less well-known: in short, you may have take circuitous routes if you have credit problems.

Credit Problems and Credit Scores / Credit History

Credit scores are an important part of your "financial profile." In Canada, where I live, credit scores are maintained by Equifax and TransUnion Credit, two private companies to whom credit granting institutions (may) report your credit history. In the UK, the organizations that hold credit scores are Equifax and Experian.

Credit scores however are not "universalized." You will note, for example that both in Canada and the UK Equifax holds people's credit scores...

Yet Equifax UK and Equifax Canada do not communicate with each other, so your credit score from England will have no bearing, if you moved to Canada, on your credit score there.

Credit Scores Can Remove or Create Credit Problems

A good credit score will help you in life. A poor credit score will generate credit problems.

However, your credit score can be worsened by actions that do not seem, in fact, to be particularly "problematic"...

For example, having NO credit history counts AGAINST you.

If you do not have a credit history, have never relied on credit, and go and apply for credit, even at your own bank, you may be refused. This can even be true if you have a very high income.

In such a case you may need to go to a credit broker.

Credit Brokers and Secured Credit Cards: Help for Credit Problems

Credit problems can be alleviated by employing either a credit broker or a strategy of taking out a secured credit card.

A credit broker will negotiate with credit insitutions, or shop around at various credit institutions, on your behalf. In this way, at a cost, you can usually secure a mortgage, loan, or other type of credit.

Credit cards that are "secured" are credit cards where you put money down before being granted the credit card by the credit institution.

You could take out a government bond, for example, with a credit institution, and this acts as collateral against which you can then receive a credit card from that credit institution: in effect your credit is guaranteed in this manner. This is a good way to build a credit profile or credit history, so you can raise your credit score.
