Spooky Places

Every October hordes of people flock to local haunted houses in order to enjoy the spine chilling fun that seems to come with that time of year. If you cannot seem to get enough of spooky, creepy fun and just cannot wait until fall rolls around, there are plenty of creepy destinations located around the world that you can visit year round.

The only difference between those local haunted houses often sponsored by charitable organizations in your local neighbourhood and these creepy destinations is the fact that the hauntings you experience in these sights may be more real than anything you have previously experienced.

Be aware, these destinations are definitely not for the faint of heart. Read on for more details about some of the most frightening, creepiest destinations in the world.

Bermuda Triangle

Without a doubt, at the top of the list for the creepiest places in the world is the Bermuda Triangle. In fact, you may even have a difficult time arriving there because so many captains and pilots simply refuse to travel to this creep destination, which has proven to be the disappearing point for literally hundreds of travellers over the years.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London is one of the most well known sights in London, but it is also one of the creepiest. Just a few of the creepy sights and sounds that have been heard over the years include rattling chains and apparitions that seem to appear out of nowhere.

The tower was first constructed some 900 years ago and in that time has served as a prison as well as an execution site for some of the most notorious characters in the history of England. One of the most infamous prisoners to be executed within the tower is the second wife of Henry the VIII, Anne Boleyn, who was beheaded in the tower.

Salem, Massachusetts

Regardless of whether it's the time of year when witches and goblins seem to continually be afoot, Salem, Massachusetts definitely has earned it reputation for being a creepy destination honestly. It is right within this quaint New England town that 19 women were convicted of being witches and ultimately hung in 1692.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast

Simply visiting a creepy sight isn't enough for you? How about staying in the same house where Lizzie Borden is reputed to have killed her own parents with an ax. Today, the creepy house serves as a museum as well as a bed and breakfast. You can even sit down and enjoy the same exact meal that Mr. and Mrs. Borden supposedly ate before their daughter killed them; johnnycakes, sugar cookies and bananas.

Roswell, New Mexico

If you have been simply languishing since the X-Files concluded its highly successful television run, then a trip to Roswell, New Mexico just might be in order. It is in this rural desert local that a resident found debris from what he believed to be a crashed UFO back in 1947. Since that time, this small desert town has become irrevocably linked with mystery and UFOs.

During your visit you will have the opportunity to browse through literally dozens of shops that are distinctly alien themed as well as the local International UFO Museum. As you tour the museum, you will find a wide range of exhibits that range from pictures as well as pieces of reported UFOs to information that relates to the highly controversial report that everyone from the local sheriff to the United States government scurried to cover up the entire incident.

Gettysburg

Although quite bucolic at the time, this beautiful farmland became the sight of the deadliest battle in the United States Civil War. According to legend it was none other than an apparition of George Washington that spurred on Union soldiers to victory just as they were losing the battle and running low on ammunition. While there are certainly no living Civil War soldier left remaining to tell the tale, there are still some locals who swear that George Washington continues to ride across the battlefield each and every summer.

The Stanley Hotel - Estes Park, Colorado

The grandiose estate was originally built in 1909 against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. So, what exactly makes this beautiful hotel so creepy? Well, it could be the fact that the long deceased wife of the first owner, Flora Stanley, is said to still inhabit the hotel; playing the piano late at night and even wandering around the lobby. Or, it could be the fact that the entire fourth floor of the hotel is said to be filled with commotion after dark. Not sure what to think? Edinburgh’s South Bridge

The underworld has often been associated with mystery. When you visit Edinburgh, you have the opportunity to see it for yourself, complete with tunnels, chambers, vaulted rooms and more passageways than you can count. The original city was opened in 1788; however, it soon closed during the early 19th century. Until 1985, most people who worked and lived above it didn't even know this underworld existed. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and many of the visitors who make their way here each year swear they have seen the ghosts of the hundreds of people who are believed to have lived, as well as died, in this underworld city without having ever seen the light of day.
