Spooky places are what Halloween is all about if you aren't in the under sixteen crowd that trick or treats through neighborhoods and malls. If you are looking for a great eerie place to visit this Halloween, you need to think about the fact that October 31, 2009 is on a Saturday. This year is the perfect year to think about checking out some of the deliciously eerie places listed in this article, because you can make a whole weekend trip out of it.

Let's start in the United States.

The Ghost Towns of California- Deserted towns can hold a whole host of excitement. Bodie is the most visited by far of all the ghost towns, but there is a whole host of them scattered across the United States. The atmosphere approaching a ghost town down a dirt tract lends itself to the spooky element of what happened here and why is the place deserted. Many towns like this have local legends associated with them. Search the Internet to see if there are any in your local area to visit this Halloween. Make a camping trip out of it and see if you can brave the night in an eerily quiet ghost town.

Salem, MA is said to be the home of the supernatural. The witch trials of 1692 left many souls who were murdered unjustly. There are any number of museums to visit. The home of Lizzie Borden is there and you can take a tour to determine for yourself if this child did indeed kill her mother.

Savannah, GA is a great place to visit on Halloween. The local cemetery is rife with tales of the supernatural. Haunted hotels, homes and the like all come together by the many tour guides who offer up exciting walking and riding tours through the town.

Moving to Scotland.

Carbisdale Castle, Scotland is the setting of a creepy and old Scottish castle. The grounds are said to be visited regularly by the lady in white. Bagpipes have been heard playing though no one was so encumbered of them when they were playing. Set on a rocky outcrop, the view is spectacular. Check out the availability well in advance as Halloween is a popular time for this castle and you don't want to miss staying there instead of near there.

Visit the monster of the deep while you are in Scotland. Loch Ness, Scotlandis home to Nessie. The beautiful deep, fresh water of the lake has been her home for years. Sightings are rare, but you can camp by the lake if you dare. While there visit Urquhart Castle ruins or the nearby Boleskine House which is reported to have been the home of the infamous Satanist, Aleister Crowley.

Ghosts hunting backpackers will enjoy a night in a prison cell at the Karosta Prison Hotel, in Latvia. Old prisons all across Europe have been turned into hotels for the backpacking elitist. This one though is the real thing. They will accommodate you by locking you into one of the many cell rooms where you will spend the evening on a wooden plank bed and be treated like an actual prisoner for the night.
