Crib for Baby
56How to Pick the Best Crib for Baby
There are a million and one different kinds of crib out there... just like there are strollers, diaper bags, car seats and everything else for baby these days. Make no mistake about it, parents-to-be, babies are a booming business. So how do you pick the best crib for baby-on-the-way?
It's tough to predict what “system” will work for you, especially if this is your first time. Of course, if this isn't your first time, chances are you will be recycling your first crib anyway. I'm going to try to keep things simple because the last thing you need is a million different inputs to make your decision. I'm going to stick to two: safety and function.
Safety
All new cribs meet the government minimum safety requirements so even the most affordable new crib is going to 1) fit a standard crib mattress snuggly, 2) will have no missing/broken hardware or slats and no cutouts in the head- or foot-boards, and 3) slats will be no more than 2 3/8" apart (the width of a soda can), and corner posts no higher than 1/16". Even when you are buying new, keep tabs on baby crib recalls.
If you have a used crib from a friend or buying one used, check it over to see that it is in compliance as well. Don't accept a crib that has been repainted. You just can’t be assured that it is free of toxic chemicals. There are plenty of affordable on new cribs that will give you peace of mind…you don't need anything other than your baby keeping you up at night! :)
Functionality
Select the features you think will be helpful or best for you and your family.
• Do you want the sides to drop?
• Do you need wheels?
• If one or both sides drop, is it controlled by a knee-push, foot bar, double trigger, or fold down?
• Do you want to be able to adjust the mattress height? And if so, how many levels?
• Do you want a convertible crib?
Just these SAFETY AND FUNCTIONALITY will help narrow down your selections on your crib for baby. But don't worry, even weeding out models that don't meet your safety and functionality criteria will leave you plenty to choose from. And from there, it's all about style....
