Side effects of medicines

Side Effects of medication is a severe long term problem in Crones Disease ( Crohn's disease, as officially spelled) Sufferers. Viable and proven alternatives are available.

Medicines are the most common Crones disease treatment. While none can cure this inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), they are used to try to reduce the swelling that causes the symptoms. The most frequently used medicines for Crones disease are Aminosalicylates and Corticosteroids to Block Inflammation, Antibiotics to Control Intestinal Bacteria, Immunomodulators to Calm the Immune System, and Biologic Therapies for Moderate or Severe Crones disease.

Brand names of these medicines are (amongst others):

  • Aminosalicylates : Mesalamine (Asacol, Pentasa), Balsalazide (Dipentum), Olsalazine (Colazal)
  • Corticosteroids: Prednisone (Deltasone), Budesonide (Entocort EC) , Hydrocortisone, Methylprednisolone (Medrol)
  • Antibiotics: Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), Metronidazole (Flagyl)
  • Immunomodulators: Azathioprine (Imuran, Azasan),6-mercaptopurine (Purinethol, 6-MP), Methotrexate (MTX, Rheumatrex, Mexate) , Tacrolimus (Prograf), Cyclosporine A (Sandimmune, Neoral)
  • Biologic Therapies: Infliximab (Remicade), Adalimumab (Humira).

side efffects

Allopathic (mainstream) doctors rely on these medicines to control the symptoms of Crones disease although they know that none of these medicines will actually cure the underlying cause. If we read about the side effects these medicines have, we might want to give the whole matter another thought:

  • Diarrhea
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Increased risk of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Indigestion, nausea, gas
  • Hair loss
  • Rash
  • Decrease in white blood cells
  • High blood pressure
  • Mood swings, psychosis, insomnia
  • Weight gain, moon facies
  • Acne, increased facial hair, stretch marks
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Osteoporosis
  • Vomiting
  • Cough
  • Sinus infections
  • Sore throat

alternatives

Apart from the above mentioned medicines, you will probably have to take medicins against diarrhea and fluid loss form time to time. Medications for Crones disease can interact with common drugs like birth control pills, antacids, and even vitamins.

It is clear that an alternative way to boost our immune system and stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in our gut would be more than welcome. Initially as an extra way to improve our health, and if possible later as a substitute for the mentioned treatments.

One treatment I found after long years of searching, is The Healing Codes: Click Here to see the video.

Yes it is actually spelled Crohn's disease. I use the (mis)spelling Crones because there are so many people spelling it this way. I want to spread the word about alternative treatments as much as I can, because I know what a suffering the disease brings. Thanks anyway!

Very interesting and useful info. I like your option to compliment the use of traditional medicines with the natural healing power. This power which everybody has is unfortunately underutilized, yet I know from my own experience that it is very powerful.

Should we not also think of preventing Crones disease. I just learned in the Netherlands the number of cases doubled as compared to a few years back (20.000 people). Healthy eating habits help to prevent the disease.

Take care (of your body), Willem

One of our son's best friend died of Crohn's Disease some five years ago

He had had it for some 8 years previously.

This man was exceptionally brave and he actually made a movie of the whole spectacle. This was aired on national television.

He suffered, but you could say he suffered well.

Thank you for a well articulated hub.

I will also read more of your hubs.

Willem: yes you are right.

I believe it has certainly something to do with our modern diet.

probably more fibre, more raw foods, vegetables etc. would help?

I would love to hear about research in that direction...

MrMarmalade:

A good friend of mine has it, and it is a dreadful disease.

I am still convinced that it is not necessary to die from it, but I am not a doctor... and maybe it was his mission in life to make other people aware?

The allopathic medicine is still very much geared towards the lessening of symptoms, and with a disease which is so structurally attacking your whole body system like Crohn's, I suppose that this way of thinking won't take us far..

but then again, I'm not a specialist.

I do help people to get rid of their asthma though, and they have often been taking meds for over 20 years to no avail. And what I do is solely mental "tricks" (from NLP - Neuro Linguistic porgramming).

My mom has this disease, and she has been fighting in for almost 15 years now. She has tried almost every medication out there. I think the reason she got it was because she was alergic to weat, which she only found out about a few years ago. However, over the last two years, she has been feeling way better than when if first started out.

Recently, she has been saying her stomach hurts again like in the past, and has to go to the bathroom alot at night. I cant stand to see my mom in pain, and after 15 years of it... I mean is there nobody out there who has actually seen any of these medications, or breakthroughs actually work? Somebody who isnt a selfrightious salesman who will say anything to make a quick buck. If there is such a treatment, please email me at warasakii@yahoo.com.

PLEASE!!! and Thanks

I have been fighting this diease since I was 13 years old. I am now 28. All theese Doctors seem to do is give me more and more pills to take. My daily medication intake has not been less than 15 pills a day in fifteen years! And my stomach still hurts! Six years ago I had over a foot of my small intestines and half of my bladder removed. that brought me some very temporary relief from this. I see a Dr. at a major hospital in Boston MA. I have asked several times to see a nutrionist to help with my diet. He constantly tells mem that diet won't help my crohns. How is that even possible? The disease in in my digestive system! any nutritoin advice would be great!!!
