Carriage set

This adorable gingham cross stitch carriage quilt and matching pillow are perfect for strolling about town with your little one. The easy cross stitch design is a colorful "Mary had a little lamb"; the pillow is trimmed with eyelet and ribbon. Make this ensemble in less than a weekend. Carriage quilt measures out to about 21" x 35" and pillow is 12". This tecnique is sewing and embroidery and is for those with some experience in sewing and embroidery. You will need these materials to start our project for quilt; 1 yard 45"- wide 1/16"- checked yellow gingham, 6 strand embroidery floss, 23" x 36" synthetic batting, 14 red buttons, Embroidery Hoop. For pillow; 1/2 yd 45"- wide 1/16"- checked yellow gingham, 1 1/2 yds ruffled eyelet, 1 1/2 yds beading, 2 yds ribbon, synthetic stuffing, Darning needle.

Directions

Quilt: Cut the yard of gingham in half lengthwise ( two 22 1/2 " by 36" pices). On one piece ( quilt top) baste a centerline halfway between the long edges. Starting 6" down from the short (top0 edge, embroider the design, matching centerlines. Place fabric in an embroidery hoop and using three strands of floss . Work the lettering in backwards Mary Had a little lamb.

2. Mark button placements on center line, the first about 2" above the picture of mary had a little lamb, the next 12" below the first, the rest 6" apart. Mark the outside rows ( five buttons each, 6" apart) to match. Baste same size batting to back of quilt top.

3. seam quilt back to quilt top, right sides together and edges even, leaving about 8" open at bottom edge. Trim batting edges close to stitching. Turn right side out. Turn in open edges and slip stitch.

4. Smooth out quilt on table and, at each mark, pin through all three layers. Sew a button at each pin and fasten thread ends securely on quilt back. Remove basting and pins.

Pillow

Cut two 13' squares of gingham (pillow top and back). Seam ends of eyelet together and stitch ruffle to edges of pillow top, right sides together and seam lines matching. Cut off 18" of ribbon and tie a bow. Thread remaining ribbon through beading and stitch beading to pillow top against the ruffle seam. With right sides together, pin pillow back to pillow top over ruffle ( which should be pinned toward center to prevent its catching in the seam). Stitch around three sides and four corners. Turn right side out and stuff. Turn in open edges and slipstitch. Sew on the bow.
