Christian Tattoos belong to the category of religious tattoos. Today many Christians have tattoos, but a few dozen years ago it was hard to find any Christian with a tattoo. There’s a hot discussion about the legitimacy of tattoos where Leviticus 19:28 is frequently mentioned: "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the LORD." In the 4th century Constantine the Great banned tattooing faces. In the 5th century a man named Manim had a tattoo on his thigh: “Manim, the disciple of Jesus Christ”. In the 6th century some Christians had tattoos of a cross or of Jesus’s name. In the 8th century pagan tattoos were forbidden. Later, some crusaders had tattoos such as a cross on the hand to help them get a Christian burial in case they die on foreign land.
