Travel In Chile

The southern part of Chile’s Lakes District is known as Los Lagos. During the mid-19th century the Chilean government actively recruited European immigrants to settle this region of the country. Germany, Austria and Switzerland were the primary target of this recruitment effort, and multitudes came to the Lakes District, helping Chile put an end to the Mapuche way of life.

If you’re traveling by air, a flight from Santiago takes you to Puerto Montt. From there, you can begin exploring this region by bus or car. If you’ve been fortunate enough to travel this far south from Santiago by private car, your trip continues to improve. Volcan Osorno is the signature landmark of the area, and has become one of Chile’s newest ski areas.

Resort Lake

If ever there were a resort lake, Lago Llanguihue qualifies. The anchor attraction here is Puerto Varas, situated along the southeastern shore of the lake. A commanding view of Volcan Osorno, located at the opposite end of the lake, is the main reason to ask for a room with a view at one of the resort lodges along the town’s shoreline.

Less than an hour from Puerto Montt’s airport, Puerto Varas is a trendy little town offering upscale lodging and shopping, cozy restaurants, friendly atmosphere, a showy casino, and that view across the lake. In addition, during summer and early autumn there is a stunning display of roses downtown near the waterfront. It is the perfect spot to base your area explorations from.

Travel Attraction

The Petrohue´ River of south Chile is one of the premier whitewater rivers in the country, making it one of the most popular. Fly fishing, rafting, and kayaking all combine to make it one of nature’s star attractions.

Petrohue´ Falls, situated in the upper reaches of the river, provides a stunning setting for the travel photographer to work in. Located in Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales, another of Chile’s great national parks, this area provides several waterfall-volcanoe image opportunities. The water is usually clear with a stunning emerald hue to it, the exception to this being during the rainy season. If possible, plan your trip at the end of the tourist season, as this location can be crowded at times. With patience you’ll be able to work between busloads of people.

Several great hikes are found within the park. The Rincon del Osorno trail, a lake hike, follows the shoreline. There is also the Saltos de Petrohue´ trail which follows the river, offering up great chances for river images.

Stunning in its natural beauty, Lago Nahuel Huapi is the starting, or ending, point for the popular Cruce de Lagos, a two day lake crossing/road travel excursion through the heart of the Lakes District.

Lake Crossing

Perhaps the most popular excursion in all of the Lakes District is Cruce de Lagos. This binational trip involves Chile and Argentina, is an all-season trip and takes two days to complete. A combination of road travel and crossing lakes takes you from Puerto Montt over to San Carlos de Bariloche, situated along the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi in Argentina. Along the way you are provided with stunning views of the Andes, waterfalls and volcanoes of the region. Book this trip in advance during the busy summer season.

This area is rich for the avid photographer, with exceptional opportunities to capture those memorable moments. Remember, when photographing the locals, always ask permission first. If done in a respectable manner, you’re likely to receive a warm response.

The emerald hued waters of Rio Petrohueprovide for great outdoor photography, as well as a very famous river for fly fishing Chile.

Lakefront Cabins

If lakefront resort lodges aren’t to your liking, there are numerous cabins along the south shoreline, minutes from town.  Available are arge cabins that can sleep up to six people as well as the more intimate cabins that are perfect for the couple seeking romance, solitude and a stunning setting.

As the sun sets across the lake, you’ll be glad for the decision to include the Lakes District as a part of your travels.  Upon your return home,  beautiful photography confirms that decision.
