Crossing Alps with your mountain bike

I reported about several possibilities of mountain biking in the West of Austria - see for mountain biking around Dornbirn and mountain biking tour Mellental. Another great trail takes you for four hours above the Rhine valley.

This mountain bike trip starts in down in the valley in Götzis, follows trails through forrests and crosses a creek (see picture below) to reach a paved road going to a mountain pension (Millrütte). Götzis holds an international recognized sport event (track & field).

Idea: Lonely Planet provides a useful travel guide for the entire country of Austria - check their offers!

From Millrüte you will have to shoulder your bike for a few minutes - downward. The next part of the trek is steep and leeds you to Emser Hütte and further. At the highest point at nearly 1.400 m altitude, the decline begins to Schuttannen, a very fast downhill drive.

The final kilometers will bring you around the Staufen, an imposant mountain, just right below the cable car station of the Karren Seilbahn. Again, a very steep and fast downhill forrest road brings you back to Dornbirn.

The entire trip length is around 35 kilometers and needs 4 hours of driving.

Idea: You can get great offers of mountain bike equipment at Wiggle!
