Cubic zirconia is much less expensive than a diamond, so cubic zirconia engagement rings are much more affordable than diamond engagement rings.

Not only are cubic zirconia engagement rings less expensive, but they look almost the exact same! To an untrained eye, cubic zirconia looks identical to diamond.

When thinking of getting an engagement ring, here's a chart comparing both cubic zirconia to diamonds that you'll want to consider:

Cubic Zirconia- Will my Girlfriend Know the Difference?

If you're wondering how easy it is to sniff out a cubic zirconia engagement ring vs. a diamond ring, it's hard.

At first glance, the two seem quite similar; truth be told, the best way to tell them apart is by using specific tools such as a magnifying glass or microscope. If your girlfriend whips these out when you propose, you might want to reconsider the engagement ;)

After time, however, cubic zirconia could crack, scratch or fade in brilliance easily. Hopefully by then you've either come clean about buying it for her (if you lied initially) or you've saved up enough money to get a diamond engagement ring.

They say a diamond is forever and that's more than just a marketing slogan- diamonds are very durable and will keep their shape and form for a lifetime in most cases. Cubic zirconia rings, however, will fade after several years depending on their exposure and care.

Cubic Zirconia Engagement Rings- Common Elements Used

Cubic zirconia isn't the only material in an engagement ring- there's also the ring/band itself to consider. The most common materials used are:

  • Sterling silver
  • Sterling silver coated with platinum
  • Rhodium coated sterling silver
  • White gold (in rare cases)

Do you see a common theme here? It's Sterling Silver and that's in order to keep the cost of the engagement ring down.

If your aim is to get an affordable engagement ring that will last, I would strongly suggest getting one with a platinum or rhodium coat. Sterling silver is too easily scratched and damaged; platinum is not.

For other types of affordable engagement rings, consider also looking at:

So I made it to Eye 4 Style. What a surprising shop. It's located in an industrial park off of Route 83 and I-55. It's a warehouse and when you get to the entrance you aren't sure what you are in for. But once you are inside, you get it. They use a beautifully decorated warehouse space so they can host events there. They host fundraisers, girls' night out, etc. Aside from the parties, they are ...

i'm one of those girls who would never be able to tell if it's a genuine diamond or cz. :) but of course, i'd rather be told the truth. that would hurt to find out that you were duped, huh? ouch! then again, when presented with some cz jewelry knowing that it's cz, it'd probably be just as happy as i would with a diamond. but that's just me. ;)

You're a rare find, perfumelover. Some would say you're a "gem", but I'm not one for puns...

I agree, getting duped wouldn't be so nice. But I wouldn't put it past males :) Now come to think of it I wouldn't put it past females either ;)

I just love cz stones and not just because of the price.

Just think if the De Beers were not such good marketeers we could have had a slogan "CZ stone is forever" or not. Weddingdude do you find many people opting out of dimonds these days?

Ivanajohn, I think they look great too. The problem is down the road- they really show wear and tear unlike diamonds. I agree though, the slogan "a diamond is forever" sure does stick.

And to be honest, I'm not as involved in the process of engagement rings as I am on weddings :) For what it's worth, most of my friends got platinum bands with multiple diamonds. Don't know how they afforded it...

In this economy a CZ Stone is the only option for some people. We have seen an increase of CZ sales over diamonds for that one reason. However CZ stones are prone to crack under more severe conditions where that will never be seen with a diamond. However side by side comparisons is that a CZ stone is really bright and at times sparkles brighter than a diamond when set into Tungsten Carbide.

CZ stones are so affordable, so it makes sense. And I agree, though, that a major downside to CZ rings is that they're more prone to crack and get cloudy over time.

Thanks for posting.

http://www.e14k.com Times are tough, cubic zirconia is the smart affordable way to get married these days. Get it in 14k gold and noone can tell. Use the 10 grand or so on a car, house, vacation, something more then a ring!

You're exactly right...cubic zirconia is quite affordable and would make it a good substitute to diamonds.
