The place where you sleep

The place where you sleep should be comfy, relaxing and sets a mood that is conducive to sleep. It doesn't just involve the bed, it's the whole room itself. It should provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you sleep. This involves keeping light not so bright since doing so would make it harder for you to sleep. By not exposing your eyes to bright lights before you sleep will actually help you sleep easier. Noise can also distract us when we try to sleep.

Mentally engaging activities

Okay, this might or might not work depending on what you do. If you're doing something monotonous, like reading a book, or solving a crossword puzzle, it might help you become sleepy. This will definitely not be the case when you try to solve mathematical problems before going to bed. The key with this one is that you should try and avoid doing something that can get your brain started before going to sleep.

A glass of milk

The reason why most of us drink milk before heading to bed is because somehow it makes it easier for us to sleep. There is actually an explanation for this. See, milk contains the amino acid tryptophan. It helps boost the production of serotonin when it reaches the brain. Serotonin helps makes you calm, relaxed and sleepy.

Exercise before going to bed.

You don't necessarily have to exercise before sleep. All you need is to make your body tired. You could try an exercise routine for half an hour in the afternoon. This way your body will feel tired and is eager for you to rest making it easier for you to sleep.

A relaxing warm bath

Following the theme, a relaxing warm bath is what you need when you are having problems sleeping. It keeps you relaxed, and improves circulation in your body. Adding bath salts to your bath will also help you sleep easier. Bath salts, specially those with Epsom salts, contains magnesium which also helps produce Serotonin.
