What Triggers Your Eczema

Eczema outbreaks or "flare-ups" are caused by an overreaction of the skin's immune system. These overreactions are usually due to environmental and emotional "triggers". These triggers range from chemicals as irritants, or allergens such as mold or dust.

For those of you suffering with eczema it is very helpful to identify these triggers and try to avoid them as much as possible. However, trying to avoid everything that triggers your eczema can be very challenging.

Here are some main causes that can trigger your eczema:

Weather/Humidity

Extremities in temperatures and extreme humidity can cause an outbreak of eczema. It can be quite challenging trying to avoid these extremities since weather changed all year. However, being in an environment with a stable temperature and humidity can be quite helpful when trying to avoid outbreaks.

When it's warm and humid in summer, make sure the temperature inside remains cool with an air conditioner. However, the cool air at the same time may be drying out your skin, so be sure to keep lotion and moisturizer handy.

In the winter, the air tends to be drier which makes it easier for dry skin to develop. Since dry skin is more prone to itchiness, the use of a humidifier during the winter can keep the humidity at a comfortable level and help you avoid those outbreaks.

Irritants

Avoid products containing irritating chemicals, most of the time these products are easy to identify. They include items such as pesticides, and paint strippers. However other irritating chemicals may be hard to identify some of these chemicals include things such as alcohol, and perfume. You should always read the ingredients in products you buy to avoid such irritants.

Clothing

Yes, clothing can also trigger eczema. How? By the types of fabrics that certain articles of clothing are made out of, and how you care for those fabrics.

It's best to avoid fabrics that feel "itchy," such as wool and burlap. Try to wear soft fabrics like cotton, its not so itchy and irritating to the skin.

Detergents can also play a huge factor in causing outbreaks. Certain detergents and fabric softeners contain chemicals that can irritate the skin. Just like when buying products such as perfume, when buying detergent and fabric softener always check the ingredients.

Stress

We all get stressed sometimes, and it might be hard to stay relaxed, especially since most of us get even more stressed when our eczema flares up again. But its important to try and relax. Research now shows that keeping calm and having a good look can help keep your eczema in control. One major type of stress that is a huge trigger of eczema is emotional stress. Things such as anxiety only add to the problem. Trying to reduce your stress may help the frequency and the intensity of your flare ups.

There are ways to keep relaxed though, try some of these tips below:

1. Meditation

2. Yoga

3. Stress Management

4. Keeping a diary or a Journal
