For millions of people suffering from ear ringing, a cure for tinnitus seems like an eternity in the coming.  As of the present, there is no definitive cure for the condition suffered by so many people.

One must keep in mind that tinnitus is a symptom of some other underlying cause.  Several diseases and disorders have been known to cause tinnitus as one of its symptoms.  Some medications have also been known to cause tinnitus as a side effect.  Since this is so, the cure for tinnitus can be had when the underlying medical cause has been cured or treated---or in the case of medication-induced tinnitus, when the patient stops consuming the medication with ototoxic side effects.

This works in some cases but in a number of others, the tinnitus continues to bother them and in yet other cases, the damage is so severe that the tinnitus does not go away at all.  This is particularly true for those who suffer from tinnitus brought about by continuous exposure to loud noises.  In this case, what causes ringing in the ears is the damage to the tiny hairs in the ears responsible for turning sound into electric signals for the brain to perceive.  Since these hairs are damaged or have been killed off, they do not process sound waves properly, resulting in the ringing or roaring sound tinnitus sufferers feel.

The only other alternative for tinnitus relief is through the use of masking devices, hearing aids or therapy.  Hearing aids are recommended for people who have tinnitus and some degree of hearing loss.  Hearing aids do seem to have a high degree of success when it comes to providing relief for tinnitus sufferers.  The effect hearing aids have on the condition is explained this way:  The device amplifies external sounds.  Since the wearer is more aware of the sounds around him or her, he or she is less aware of the sounds tinnitus makes.  The problem however comes back when the hearing aids are removed.

Masking devices on the other hand, can range in anything from a white noise maker to a radio tuned to inter station static.  What these devices do is that they mask the ringing or roaring in the ears made by tinnitus.  Some use a sound recording of waves crashing onto the shore and played in a continuous loop to help mask the sound tinnitus makes when they go to bed.  Still others use the sound of a rotating fan to mask ear ringing.

Consult your medical specialist at the soonest possible time to find out what else you can do to relieve yourself from tinnitus.
