Pictures of curly hair styles can help your stylist create the exact style that you want when it is time for a new haircut. Be sure to try to find someone that specializes in curly hair because the structure of curly hair is completely different that straight hair and it can be harder to work with.

Curly hair is generally drier and more brittle that straight hair and it has a tendency to break more easily, especially as you get older. Because there is a tendency to use more hair products and appliances on curly hair to get it into a particular style there can be a lot of damage over time. Find someone that understands the special needs of curly hair and then develop a working relationship with them. Your hair will look great all the time and your stylist will be able to advise you on different looks you are interested in because he knows what your hair can and can't do.

Curly hair requires both a good cut and good care. By finding pictures of curly hair styles that you like and a good stylist you are halfway there.

Curly hair needs a gentle shampoo and good conditioning. Don't brush your hair but gently comb through it with a wide tooth comb when it is wet. Apply a leave in conditioner and then style as usual. Using a curl activator spray or gel can help keep curls defined.

If at all possible get a cut that allows your hair to dry naturally rather than using heat.

Short Curly Hair Styles

Short curly hair styles are seen as being carefree....by the people that don't have curly hair! With the wrong cut you end up looking like you stuck your finger in a light socket in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Choose a style that works with the natural curl and direction of your hair. It is much easiest to coax it into a style that it does naturally than to create something that will take hours to accomplish and a ton of hair spray to maintain.

Make sure that the cut works well with both your face shape and your body type. Many women with curly hair have rounded lines in their face and body as well.

Allow your hair to air dry for ten minutes or so, and then use a scrunching gel to define your curls. Scrunch with your fingers to get the shape that you want.

Medium Curly Hair Styles

Much of the time curly hair does not get longer it gets wider. Cut is important!

Medium length curly hair generally falls to the shoulder. That can be deceptive because when it is wet it may be well below the shoulder. A stylist that is not familiar with the spring of curly hair can easily create a style that falls below the shoulder when wet but barely hits the bottom of the earlobe when dry.

Depending on the texture of the hair, when curly hair gets to be a medum length it can become weighed down and the curls turned into waves. Layered cuts are normally best for any length of curly hair, but especially medium and long hair.

Allow your hair to air dry for about twenty minutes and the, with your head upside down, run some curl activator gel, or styling balm through your hair, depending on the look you desire. Scrunch gently and turn rightside up, allowing your curls to fll into place.Use a frizz controlling product because once your hair gets to the medium stage it will begin to take on a life of its own.

Long Hair Styles and Tips

Curly hair is sexy whether it is short, medium, or long but when it is long, and well taken care of it can be incredible.

Be sure to comb it from the bottom up when it is wet, very gently to keep it from breaking off. If it needs to be put back in place then finger comb it as needed when it is dry. Use a deep conditioning treatment often to keep it moisturized and at its best.

Long curly hair is very versatile. You can put it up and allow tendrils to hang down, or leave it long and loose. It will take well to a french braid or any other style you might want to try as long as you allow the curl to do it's own thing.

Long curly hair is more susceptable to damage and it is very important to have it trimmed regularly, deep condition, and us a comb gently. Allow it to air dry for twenty to thrity minutes before styling. Use products that are formulated for curly hair. The one that I recommend the most is the LUSH Trichomania for dry, curly hair. It gives new life to the curls and is very gentle. Besides...it's LUSH.

Yes - on Avery Brooks and Christopher Judge! :) On Persis Kambhatta as well as gamer girl, but not on me.

But I've seen ad displays from 1960s in which French models wore shaved heads with a wide headband-like strip of fur or feathers. It was actually attractive on some and I think French women did it. But not me. I'll use the tips in this Hub!

My hair is like a Tasmanian devil twirling. lol

Great tips! I have curly hair and probably don't take nearly good enough care of it, though I don't abuse it either. Mostly, I like it a lot - just wish it weren't so prone to wispies.

My profile pic shows my hair just after I came back from having it straightened, normally it is curly. "Curly hair does not get longer, it gets wider" No truer words have ever been spoken! Sometimes I feel the Cathy comicstrip character.

Thx for the help here!

I've got naturally curly hair, but have spent decades trying to keep in smooth and straight. Must have mutated genes though because both daughters born with straight straight hair. And, of course, they wish their hair had curl! But Shirley is right...curly hair seems to get wider and wider!

My hair is naturally curly as well. As a young child I endured "curliest" strength permanents from my mother every end of August before school started in hair that was only 2-3 inches long anyway. From Septmber to January until the 9th grade, no brush or comb could penetrate it. lol
