Your housing costs are usually the largest part of your household budget. This is one reason that so many people look at their housing costs first when they are trying to find ways to save money.

Here are some ways that you can reduce the amount of money that you are spending on housing costs each month.

Number one: Refinance
Getting a new mortgage at a lower interest rate is the best way to save money on your housing costs, as long as you own your own home. Even if you have to spend some extra money upfront to lock in that, lower interest rate. When you refinance your home you are going to be saving money month after month, which means that you will see it paying off for you each month. Not to mention that the longer you own your own home the more money that you will be saving. To find out how long you are going to need to keep your new loan to make sure that refinancing is worthwhile you can use a Refinance Calculator that can be found online.

Number two: Downsize
If your home is too big for your current needs, you might want to consider moving to a less costly place to save money on your housing costs; this means you will need to find a place that is smaller in size. The good news is that with the home prices and mortgage interest rates declining you can find a home that suits your needs for an affordable price. Another benefit to going with a smaller home is that it can mean big savings on utilities, maintenance, and repairs.

Number three: Relocate
Some areas have higher housing costs than others do, you could probably save lot of money by moving to an area where housing is more affordable. However, this option is not going to be the best choice for everybody. This option works best for people who are retired or who have a flexible job. If you do some research, you can see the dramatic differences in housing costs from different areas. By simply moving to a different area, you can save hundreds of dollars each month without having to skimp on the size or comfort of your home.

Number four: Reassess
If your house has declined in value since your property taxes were last assessed you might be able to save money on your property taxes by challenging the assessor's latest valuation of your property. Most communities have a formal process that you have to follow to dispute the amount of their property taxes. What you will need to do is present information that you believe will show that your house has a lower value for property tax purposes. This savings can be a substantial cut for housing costs with very little effort.

Number five: Research
How much money that you pay out for homeowner's insurance can vary widely depending on who your insurer is. What you are going to want to do is some basic research that allows you to shop around and compare rates. Doing this can help you save a lot of money and you can still get the same amount of coverage. You also need to make sure that you ask for a multiple-policy discount if you insure your home and car with the same company.

Number six: Reduce
Reducing the amount of utilities that you use in your home is another way to save on housing costs. You can weatherproof your home to help reduce small air leaks and install water conservation devices to reduce the amount of water that you are using. You can also plant shade trees in your yard to help keep your home cooler in the summertime. Turning down the setting on your water heater and turning off electronic devices when they are not in use is another way to reduce your utilities. You also need to consider getting energy-efficient appliances so that they can pay for themselves in just a few years.
