Cycling-May 12, 2010 Union Groovin' and Mebane Espressin'

Updated on June 15, 2010

On the Road To Mebane Espress For Espressos and Gellattos.

Mebane Express

It's no secret for many of my cycling friends that I love the Mebane Espress!

There are many places that are friendly on our bike rides.

None of our hosts roll out the "red carpet" like our friends at Mebane Espress!

When our hosts catch the first glimpse of us they bring the tables and chairs out.

We are greeted like we're real people!

Our hosts are real. It's obvious that they intend to practice that "Golden Rule".

They treat us as royalty. They are so cordial!

COFFEES, ESPRESSOS, AND GELLATTOS!

You need water? They fill you up!

But- they are genuinely glad that we are here.

This Mebane Espress is my favorite destination!

Ry Cooder - Crazy 'Bout An Automobile

We're Union Groovin' and Mebane Espressin'!

Great weather makes a great group, I'm guessin'.

It's nice starting at the church under the trees.

It's warmer, you can tell by the bare arms and knees.

Nothing is more colorful or beautiful for me,

Than a string of cyclists as far as you can see.

The cyclists' jerseys are so colorful and bright.

All colors of the rainbow, what a tremendous sight!

The climber's jersey is white with red spots.

See, there are so many colors and - polka-dots!

We ride by silos on a quaint little farm.

A plowed field on the left adds more charm.

The group spreads out as we make this turn.

Some will wait for Dairyland to make their legs burn.

I wonder what crops will be growing here.

What does the farmer plan for the rest of the year?

There are many things a farmer grows.

I hope he reaps just what he sows!

The farmer's canvas is very large.

For a picture like this, what would he charge?

We're passing through this living art.

We are slow enough to "be a part"!

Cyclists are purists! They're often kind and noble.

They're beautiful They're art! And- they're mobile!

Even the young kids like these have got the guts.

They are manly men drafting manly men's butts!

They use each other to block the wind.

Not taking a turn might be considered a sin!

It's just that if you can pull, you do pull.

It's just being helpful, now be careful!

We can't go far without a farm in the distance.

Something will give them away, like a silo for instance.

Up ahead we spot a "Bruce" on the loose.

If I'm riding with Bruce, I should pack stronger juice!

I could write an ode, just for Dairyland Road!

Here at he Dairy Bar you can have ice-cream a la-mode.

I've taken lot's of photos riding through here.

It changes so ever slowly throughout the year.

I'd better quit taking pictures and gawkin'!

I'm way at the back. No time for casual talkin'.

The faster guys are way down the road.

Chasing, then suffering, might write the Dairyland Ode.

It's a great bicycle group riding a great bicycle loop.

We are all out for fun, a bike ride, some sun.

Sure there are cute girls with that glowing radiance.

But I am only interested in their pedaling cadence!

Now on Dodsons Tod comes along. He's way too strong.

I was hoping for a fun day since he kicked my butt Sunday!

Alan "waited" for Tod and now he's pale as a ghost.

You "help" a strong man like Tod- he'll turn you to toast!

Now there are two assassins in our midst.

There are two assassins to give our screws a twist!

These are strong guys and might thrill you.

But the two assassins will try to kill you.

It's a great pace for now. It's the calm before the storm.

The assassins will be miles down the road while the bodies are still warm!

Here's "peaceful" Bruce shooting the peace sign.

Where will he pick up the effort and drop my behind?

Maybe not here. There's a downhill ahead.

Bruce will attack on the flats and make sure that I'm dead!

Some horses in the field are animated as well.

Up to now I'm feeling okay, as far as I can tell.

Maybe if I can make it, just over this rise,

Perhaps there's relief for my burning thighs.

Our group's thinning out. Is the pace too hard?

I wonder if anyone cares if I pass out in this yard?

Are they taking a breather as they take the corners slow?

When is the attack? How the heck will I know?

No sounds but the gasping for air will we hear,

As we watch down the road as they disappear!

I couldn't stand the suspense so I attacked alone.

I went too early. I died. Then they were gone!

Get your wheels out and travel downtown Mebane for some real gellattos and espresso!

The line starts here!

Ahh! This is the life that we all should live!

Outside the Mebane Espress a vicious animal was restrained.

How did this monster get so mean? How was it trained?

The dog handler had a grip that was tighter than tight.

The animal seemed rabid and ready to bite!

So not to become a little doggy treat,

I moved my butt across the street.

Now the guys were getting anxious to roll.

They were eager to point out another roadkill or pot-hole..

Now Cy would take a pull at the front.

It was just to make us hurt- to be blunt!

It wasn't long before Bruce took a turn.

Bruce would make my legs, neck, and head burn.

We're back to Dairyland and almost to Union Grove.

I'm shot. There are a dozen miles home. I wished I drove.

For Bruce, Bruce's bike is as comfortable as can be.

At times I call it a torture rack. That's what it is to me!

Now look! Tod is happy and so is Cy!

Sure- I'll feel the same as time passes by.

Yes, we played really hard and had a lot of fun.

But now you can stick a fork in me! I'm done!

Ry Cooder - How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live

The training for the Assault on Mount Mitchell is over. All I can do is try to recover from what I've been doing lately and just take some "maintenance rides".

I know that I will not become stronger. I can only be what I am. The Assault will bring pain in the legs, the back, the hip, the neck, the arms, and most probably give me a scorching headache. I don't think of the "Assault" much. Whatever my ride will be is already written down. It's a dead issue- all but the actual dying part. That takes place in a week.

There are a lot more important things than the "Assault on Mount Mitchell". It is merely a yearly gut check.
