What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are the plastic coating which is bonded on the tooth surface to give a smooth finish, prevent tooth decay and food lodgement.
Do everybody need Dental sealants?
No,it varies from person to person.If patient is having deep grooves on the back teeth i.e especially molars ,then dental sealants are placed.Sometimes bristles of brush cannot reach the surface of the back teeth, as a result bacteria keep on accumulating on the surface and progress to tooth decay.
Sealants make the tooth surface smooth and prevent the attack of bacteria.So,those who are having deep fissures or grooves,they need dental sealants.
What is the procedure of applying dental sealants on the tooth surface?
1) Firstly,dentist will clean the area around the teeth ,so that bonding of sealant should be strong.
2) Then the tooth will be properly dried and isolated with the help of cotton gauge to prevent contamination with saliva.
3) Tooth is then etched with an etchant.This gel gives the tooth a frosty appearance which helps in proper bonding of the sealant
4) After few seconds tooth is washed properly and dried again.
5) Now apply the sealant on the groove carefully.While applying take care tooth should be properly dried.If its contaminated with saliva,then the sealant will come out very fast.
6) After applying the sealant tooth is cured with blue light.This activates the catalyst in sealant which helps it to set.
7) After curing ,sealant is finished with the help of smooth rubber burs if needed.
