59Top 5 Video Contest - Day One 3/29/08
I have assembled 5 Videos for you this evening my fellow hubbers. I will do so every single day forever. 5 Videos that you will either remember and want to relive over again OR you will be seeing the great the stuff you missed for the first time.
A NEW LIST WILL BE RELEASED EVERY NIGHT AT 8PM - primetime, if you will.
We are gonna keep things fresh and interactive around here: Your comments will decide the Most Funktual Video of the Day which will be put on display in my Museum of Funktual Videography.
The Vidiot of the Week will be the Person/Hubber who picks the winning video most often for any given week.
The winner of Vidiot of the Week is entitled to choose a theme for the TOP FIVE VIDEOS one day the following week.
The TOP FIVE VIDEO Contest Debut!
BEST USE OF CELEBRITIES IN A MUSIC VIDEO >>> Round One
AND THE NOMINEES ARE...
1) Winona Ryder, Giovanni Ribisi and John C. Reilly are featured as lead singer, guitarist and drummer in the music video "Talk about the Blues" By Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Before dismissing this seldom heard and weird song, you will love the commitment by these three actors pretending to be the band performing.
#1 Nominee: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Talk About The Blues"
CAN I GET A RESHOOT? Sure but it's gonna cost ya the lead singer!
2) Paul Simon didn't like the original video he shot. While appearing on Saturday Night Live, a replacement video was conceived and recorded, wherein Chevy Chase lip-synched all of the vocals while Simon wore a bored expression, it has become a classic. Let's watch and remember fondly a time when Chevy Chase was still funny.
NOMINEE #2 Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al"
The Dawn of MTV when videos for wonderful and meaningless!!!!!!!!
3) A glam metal band from L.A. had a new single that they thought could help them make it big. All they needed was a video. Milton Berle's guest appearance (dressed in drag, no less) on the video for Round and Round was a big break for the Hair Band we know as RATT. Personal confession: I don't care much for Hair Bands anymore but for some unknown reason I freakin' love the sleazy style of Ratt! If you want to know more songs to check out.....they are, "Wanted Man", "Back for More", "Lay It Down", "You're In Love" & "Way Cool Jr." If you like these guys, you probably also love Tesla.
#3 Ratt- "Round and Round"
IDEA! WE'LL DO THE VIDEO "TAKE ME HOME" by Phil Collins MIXED WITH THE VIDEO FROM "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr.
4) First of all, I DO NOT LIKE this band buuuut, this damn song is gonna be around forever so I might as well get used to it. The video features celebrities that include Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top (who voices his lines in the song), Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Eliza Dushku, Gene Simmons, Wayne Gretzky, John Rich, the cast of The Girls Next Door, Kid Rock, Lupe Fiasco, Nelly Furtado, the crew from American Chopper, Paul Wall, Ted Nugent, and numerous others. Sometimes the lyric they are lip synching relates to themselves. At the end of the video Nickelback is shown playing live on stage; this shot was filmed July 13, 2007 at the Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts in Mansfield, Massachusetts.
#4 Nickelback - "Rock Star"
A BUNCH OF HOT MODELS? WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THIS SOONER? AND HOW SOON CAN WE DO IT AGAIN?
5) This video which was directed by David Fincher featured a number of supermodels including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz and Cindy Crawford. It is not only George Michael's funkiest song but it is also a pleasure not to have to see him in it.
#5 George Michael - "Freedom '90"
IN CASE YOU WERE EXPECTING SOMEONE ELSE....
Alicia Silverstone & Aerosmith perhaps?
Danny Aiello & Madonna???

When I was little, I used to think the guy in the 'call me Al" video was saying "call meow" like a cat hahaha
NICE!!!! OK, I just watched all 5 too, and I'm trying not to let the songs influence my pick. My vote is for #5 Freedom '90.
That Call Me Al video is really funny, by the way... like you said, its refreshing to see when Chevy Chase was still humorous!
Okay so that's
1 for Rock *
1 for Call Meow
1 for Freedom for the Hott Models!
Anyone else want to weigh in?
You are fantastic! I vote for #4! Also you should check out www.jamsbio.com it is a place where you can write your musical memories, a lot of fun!
Thx Erinn, that sounds like it's right up my alley. Nickelback takes a slight lead!
I´m so glad you finally made it!! I still remember asking you to make one hub with music videos ;)
Lets see if I get it right, you want us to vote for the celebrities use on the videos, right!? Well, in that case I must vote for Rock mainly because of Nelly Furtado ;)
My second choice would be the super models (but I must admit that I turned the sound off on this one) :D
Ok, I watched all 5 videos and will judge based on my interpretation of the rules. I like the songs in #1 and 4 the best, but if the catagory is "BEST use of Celebrity in a Video" it totally has to be Call me Al.
John Spencer Blues Explosion !! That is hilarious. I can't believe you guys think that Nickelback's video is using the celebrity cameo the best. They just have a bunch of clips of celebrities lip synching. That is an uninspired waste of sweet A-list (and B-list) celebrities.
You know what........... your right mroconnell! And so are you Rhym! I don't I think I judged it properly myself. I am recanting my vote for the lame ass Nickelback and casting MY OFFICIAL VOTE 4
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Talk About The Blues!!!!! That's Right!
New Tally Totals:
#1, #2 and #4 have 2 Votes each. #5 has a vote. Meanwhile.... Ratt & Uncle Milty are gettin no love!
Yo Funkitude-- I love your contest idea and am gonna give you my vote, even though you gotta remember I'm more Mozart than MTV in my taste:-)--I don't even know who some of the celebs are(that's how old and unhip I am) but I do love music videos as they are a wonderful synergy of auditory and visual pleasure..... OK--Here goes-- I liked #1 the best--loved the music and the integration of the subway and Brooklyn Bridge shots into the video--very cool, sophisticated- gotta go with #1 for pure enjoyment. However You can call me Al is a hoot and I'm a fan of both Paul Simon and Chevy Chase--not to mention SNL, but I'm still going with #1-- best use by a celeb or not, for me it is the best video with the best music......you guys can keep your super-models and your nickelback.
Right ON Robie2!!!!!!
That is one rockin comment!!!
Jon Spencer taked the leadbaby YEAHHH!!!!
I really love the way Giovanni Ribisi looks exactly like Jack White.
Ratt and Milton Berle, how can you go wrong,
Thank You Mr. Ewing and that is one for Ratt!
Jon Spencer 3
Paul Simon 2
Nickelback 2
George Michael 1
Ratt 1
Can you really keep this up everyday...forever?
I can as long as people care enough to vote.
I'm hoping to build a little following. These only take 2-3 hours to make. If you like 'em tell a friend who comment multiple times, that is the only thing driving me.
The only thing that motivates me is feedback. If people don't care, I won't either but if they do, they are gonna see a lot of A+ nostalgia and learn about lotsa cool stuff like Video #1, up there.
Bro make a bunch of these, you just became my jukebox source.. I have to write 100 blogs a day for my home based jobby job and man sometimes these keywords are brutal (How many ways can you explain the awe inspiring effects of a Barcelona chair or a payday loan????) When I played the videos on your page (after reading it over once) I kept playing them again and again while I wrote.. pretty great classic hits you picked.. I really liked the chevy chase video (my break lol ).. Keep up the good work bro
Jerrico
C'mon people? Help me out!!!!!! This HUB is blowing up and yet none of you are voting. Don't you wanna earn Schrute Bucks?
Just stopped back to see if you had a winner yet--guess not yet huh?
Ooooohhh....toss up between 2 and 4.
Although #2 is funny, I think I have to pick #4, mostly because I love Nickleback, ZZ Top, and Gene Simmons, so I really liked seeing them all in there. Have to admit that the Milton Berle one brought back memories - classic.
Thanks for voting Shirley. I surely do appreciate it.
Let's watch DJ Funktual pretend he is Ryan Seacrest....
Okay America the phone lines are still open until midnight so get your votes in now.
Part 2 of this series of videos will be released at midnight as well.
CURRENT TOTALS
#1 (my pick) #2 (Rhym's pick) and #4 (Shirley's pick) each have 3 Votes!
Ratt and George Michael have 1 Vote each.
Email a friend! Let's get some real tallies going!
P.S. Tomorrow's videos are gonna blow these away, I can see it now.
#5 in top place for me followed by #2.
The video work is better in #5, yet the music is nicer in #2.
Good luck with your contest.
Come on people....this is not about what song or group you like best or else I would totally change my vote. Following the rules, I think you will HAVE to agree that Paul Simon made the best use of the celebrity in his video.
Not that I am competative or anything.
No, Rhym, not competitive at all. I'm going to have to agree with you, though, and cast my vote for #2. All the other videos use celebrities for cameos, which is cute, but #2 features and uses the talent of the celebrity. Plus, now the song is stuck in my head.
I disagree Rhym. I think the other three in Video #1 were much more committed and funnier concept.
Guess what Rhym? I've got the Top 5 all ready for tomorrow. Do you want a sneak peak or are gonna savor it for tomorrow?
Whoa!! My wife Paula would like to chime in.
" I wouldn't normally just agree with my husband, but in this case, I do. My vote is for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion also.
I want to say number two is my favorite.
SweetiePie missed the midnight deadline by almost an hour but keep those votes coming.
I live in California, so I was not thinking about that lol.
Well, I was too late to see #4, it's not available anymore.
I'll go with #1 just for the performance...
Hey DJ...without watching any of these videos, I'm voting for number 2 (although my vote is late). The reasons I'm voting for number 2 are:
1) It's the only video where I know who all the people are
2) Because annemaeve and Rhym did
Not only am I not up on any of this stuff, I also have no ability to listen to or watch a music video. I suffer from VADD (video attention deficit disorder).
However, I decided to cast my vote, because you were so nice about asking for it. :)
So in future contests, I promise always to vote late and follow someone else's lead.
Thanks for the Heads up on #4 it has been fixed!
For me it's a tie between #2 Call me Al. and #3 RATT.
Paul Simon is pulling away from the pack on day two!
Late vote, but definitely #2 if we're voting on the most creative use of a celebrity in a video.

I just watched the 5 Videos and I gotta say that as much as i want to pick #1, I just can't because that Nickelback video is just too cool. Stupid Nickelback is kickin my ass in my own contest. What a World!
MY VOTE IS FOR #4 ROCK STAR
