DJ Hero doesn't cut any corners when it comes to realism by teaching you to scratch, cross-fade and beat match just like a real DJ would. You will start learning the techniques top DJs use to keep the party jumping all night long. You'll start out easy and work your way through the set lists at various difficulties.

Not only do you get the game, DJ Hero Renegade Edition includes one of the brand new Renegade Turntable Controllers. This turntable is the key to allow you the player to mix the many songs included with DJ Hero and add a large number of samples and effects to the mixes. The Renegade Turntable Controller also includes a carrying case that can be used as a DJ stand for any performance situation. Though a majority of Guitar Hero players haven't touched a real guitar, they pick up the simple aspects of the game within a few minutes. If you've ever seen someone play a real guitar, you know the basics of playing both a real guitar and Guitar Hero - one hand strums, while one hand frets. The average person doesn't sit in their room enjoying their favorite music and "Air DJ" so Activision and Freestyle Games solve this problem with their DJ Hero game. This may be the first experience many up and coming DJs have with the world of DJing and all of the technical aspects of DJing.

Like Guitar Hero and other rhythm based game, DJ Hero features matching up colored buttons on a note highway that is going by as the music plays. The colored notes that float down the music highway match one of the three buttons on the Renegade Turntable Controller.

The green and blue notes on the screen represent the two music tracks being mixed together on the DJ Hero track, whereas the red notes select plays one of the many samples you can choose by turning a knob on the Renegade Turntable Controller whenever you would like during the song.

Similar to Guitar Hero and other rhythm games, once one of the notes comes down to the horizontal note bar, you press the button of the same color on the Renegade Turntable. You will find yourself multitasking similar to chords in Guitar Hero as you press the left and right buttons on the controller as you try and mix one of the many samples in the game.

DJ Hero has the ability to be as challenging as some of the hardest Guitar Hero songs when it comes to perfecting the art of scratching. Though even at the basic level, the game is easy to pick up as you press the green or blue button when needed as you scratch the record on the controller as long as you need to in the game.

Even beginners can experience and enjoy the fullness of the complicated scratches while keeping the game simple enough to learn. As you progress through the game and start challenging yourself to harder difficulty levels, arrows showing which way to scratch the record will start to appear. As these new arrows appear, you'll have to be more accurate with matching the direction in which you scratch with the rhythm of the songs you are mixing.

Getting the fundamentals of scratching down may take a few tries if you have never spent time on the wheels of steel. Moving the turntable controller to correspond with the buttons on the screen is where the real difficulty of the game is found. The average player will use the index finger and ring finger for most of the controls for the green and blue buttons respectively which provide a difference in control and strength which you will notice after playing a few rounds.

DJ Hero allows you to try many songs at various difficulty levels for all types of players. For the beginner, the game includes an in-game tutorial provided by DJ legend Grandmaster Flash. Grandmaster Flash will take you through all the aspects of gameplay from the note highway, turntable and cross fading while being set to the familiar songs "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen and "Da Funk" by Daft Punk.

After you've learned the basics of gameplay, you'll start learning more complicated techniques such as using the special effects dial to add DJ effects such as envelope filter effects to your mix while mixing your songs.

While playing the easier levels, a majority of the time you are sampling records with the buttons and just scratching the surface with the fundamentals of scratching. As you progress onto the medium difficulty, cross fading is added into the game and you start using both hands to mix the songs which proves to be a fun challenge at first.

If you find yourself lost in a sea of notes and have no idea where to go, no matter how bad you mess things up, the party goes on with DJ Hero. DJ Hero features a no-fail system within the game where all you need to do to get the music rolling again (even after the hardest sections) is to hit a few correct notes. You quickly get th party going again almost immediately after you do.

DJ Hero boasts the ability to make set lists with all the songs you've unlocked throughout your many hours of fun.  So you'll be able to enjoy all of the many song samples while between songs in your set.

Though DJ Hero makes for an excellent solo game, the multiplayer gameplay is of top quality as is expected from the makers of Guitar Hero.

DJ Hero features DJ vs. DJ gameplay. Two DJs will be scratching and mixing it up as they fight to get the highest score in DJ vs. DJ mode, both DJs play the same sequences of notes. Wise use of Euphoria (similar to Guitar Hero's Star Power which is activated by pressing a button next to the special effects knob) is key as parts can't be swapped from DJ to DJ.

This game boasts many mixes from popular songs including: Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" versus Gorillaz' "Feel Good Inc.", Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" versus Rick James' "Give it to Me", Benni Benassi's "Satisfaction" versus Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow".

A good time is to be found with DJ Hero even if you've never experienced being apart of the club scene, seen a DJ in action or even used a turntable before in your life. DJ Hero allows even first players just starting out to learn the basics.
