DOGgy HOUSE:How to get your dog to come to you when called

The most common complaint from dog owners is that their dog does not come when called, or even ignores them completely! My first question to them is, "When was the last time your dog did not come to you when called?" This always leads into a dramatic reinactment of a day at the dog beach or dog park when the owner proudly states how they spoiled their dog with a field trip of fun and games. Yet, when it was time for the owner to go home and they called their dog to come, they are painstakingly hurt at the ungrateful attitude of their dog not only not coming to them, but instigating a full chase to even catch their dog.

If you are only calling your dog when it is time to go home, go into the kennel, or end the festivities, then your dog is now trained to not come when called. Coming to you when called has meant ending something good (from your dog's point of view). Hence, your dog hears you call him so he avoids you and runs the other way. This not only does not end the playtime, but he now has lured you into a thrilling game of chase. To rehabilitate this fleeing subject, always call your dog for only good things (ex: treat, ball, play, affection). When you need to end playtime, walk over to your dog to put the leash on (stealth-like) and then continue a few moments of play. This will help to unrelate the leash to the leaving. Then happily say, "Let's go..." Be sure to notice the look of gratitude and admiration from your best friend for a fun-filled day at the park!
