If you have been convicted of driving while intoxicated, you may be searching for DWI car insurance.  Typically this is special car insurance for people with past convictions which renders them a very high risk for insurance companies.  First, you should be happy that following a DWI conviction, you are not in prison and that you have kept the privilege of driving. In many cases, especially for second or third convictions, a DWI results in a prison term and very commonly the lost of your driver's license.  An insurance company's rates are determined by formulas that calculated your expected risk of having an accident and damaging property, cars, yourself and other people.  Now that you have a DWI, the insurance company can justify charging you a huge amount because you have been certified to be high risk through your conviction.  Unfortunately this is a great way for insurance companies to make a lot of money because you won't have much choice: most people need to drive to work or for their normal activities, and you are required to have insurance. No profit-seeking insurance company will charge you the same rates as a normal driver, so you should expect to pay dramatically more.

Finding the cheapest DWI Car Insurance

Though it may now be too late, the best way to keep cheap car insurance after a DWI charge is to not get convicted. It can be financially a good decision to hire a good lawyer since getting convicted can have truly disastrous consequences. Once you are convicted, it's very likely that many of the more budget-oriented insurance companies such as Geico and AAA will not be willing to cover you. Other companies will probably offer to cover you but at a high cost. If there are classes you can take after getting a DWI, take them since they may help you get lower premiums. Your best bet is going to be to shop around and compare rates from many different companies. They all use different formulas to assess risk and decide on premiums so the more place you check, the better chance you have of finding a policy that you can afford. You can also talk with an independent insurance broker who has the resources to efficiently get quotes from many insurance companies and who may have advice from helping other people with DUI convictions find insurance in the past.

Another less appealing choice is to decide that a car is not necessary in your life and use alternatives like biking and public transportation instead of owning a car.
