How to Grow Daffodils

Daffodils are one of the most beautiful flowers of spring. They are of the narcissus family and produce a large variety of color. Being perennial , they return every year and triple in quantity each year. By the third year it is usually good to divide them so the roots will not get over crowded and cause a decline in bloom.

I like to pull all the dead blooms off right after their season has ended. That way the seed pod that forms in the steam will not pull the growth from the bulb. Never cut them back, their next years blooms form in this years leaves. They will dry up on their own and give way to the summer flowers. They thrive best in poorer soil, sand, even clay, but they must NOT be kept damp. The bulbs will rot if over watered. As you can see in the picture, I have no problem with drainage here on the mountain. It drains too well and washes the soil from my bulbs, so I throw some sand or saw dust on my bank ever other year. I like to use them for a low maintenance tree ring. It saves a lot of weed eating during the summer.

My Easter cross of daffodils are mostly of the tiny yellow trumpets that bloom first I tried to integrate it with some later bloomers so the blooms are continuous for about 30 days. In this picture it is under construction. The hill it is on is so steep I am putting a walkway above and below so I can maintain easier and have less to weed eat. It is sure a straight and high slope I can see it from my dining room window, so I try to keep it a pleasant view. Hope you enjoy the video.
