Daily Devotion: Passion For Jesus
59THEY DON’T GET IT
What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 2 Corinthians 6:15 (NIV)
“I don’t know why you spend so much time at your church!” A friend said to a young woman. She didn’t answer because she wasn’t sure why she did spend a great deal of her time at the church. As she kept rolling the question over and over she concluded she was at church because somebody had to do the things she was doing. That answer troubled her the next day. She read an article in a magazine about people being their happiest when they were involved in things they liked. “Maybe that’s it!” She thought but still wasn’t satisfied. Her church had a movie night and everyone brought popcorn but no one ate any popcorn because the movie was THE PASSION. She wept and buried her face in her hands when Jesus was beaten. Before the crucifixion scene she left the church because watching was too painful. Later she told her friend, “I spend so much time at church because of what Jesus did for me.”
Unbelievers can’t understand “church” nor why believers spend so much time, money and energy on “church”. The New Testament talks about the “Mystery” of faith because for those who don’t believe it is a mystery how anyone could commit so much to “religion”. We know it is not religion but a person we commit to – Jesus died for us!
The answer is Jesus. Let us never forget He is the reason for what we do and how we live. Those who don’t know Jesus only see “church” and “religion”. Just as the woman came and washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and hair, so we live for Him because He loves us and we love Him. It is not “church” or “religion” it is simply love.
