Dalian is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in China. Situated on the northern coast of China, it is famous for its beaches, despite its long winters. The city came to economic prominence as a terminus for the Trans-Siberian railway. While there is still quite a bit of early 20th century architecture, Dalian is one of the most modern and prosperous cities in China.

Sports fans might be interested in Dalian Shide, one of the the most successful soccer teams in China’s Super League. The team plays at Dalian People’s Stadium from March until November. If a traveler asks around, they should be able to find out when the team’s next game will be held. Most people from Dalian are quite proud of the team, and follow their progress closely.

There are two aquariums in Dalian. The Polar Aquarium is a huge complex, and houses everything from herring to whales. The other aquarium is called Sun Asia Ocean World. It has a moving walkway that moves past the tank. This place is packed most of the time, and things get uncomfortably claustrophobic on weekends. Both these places are worth visiting for their sheer scale, if not their atmosphere.

Another aspect of Dalian that has gained notoriety is its number of squares and parks. These open public spaces give the city an easy-going atmosphere. Zhongshan Square is the biggest and most worth seeing. The early 20th century architecture is worth a look during daylight, while at night, the square is a hangout for locals. There is a big screen TV in the square where people gather to watch their beloved Dalian Shide soccer team. Another evening gathering place is People’s Square.

There are numerous beaches in or near Dalian. Fujiazhuang is the best bet for relaxing, as most other beaches are quite crowded. Bangchuidao Beach is another spot worth checking out, although a private car or taxi will be required as there is no public transit to the area. Outside Dalian, the seaside is home to some scenic views, including rock formations.

Thought the local cuisine is rather bland in comparison to some of China’s other regions, there are plenty of options. Being an economically advanced city, there is a booming nightlife scene in Dalian. However, some of the best drinking and eating can be had away from the glitzy neon of modern bars. In spring and summer, there are plenty of night markets serving cheap local fare and decent beer. The relaxed and festive atmosphere at these venues makes them worth a visit.

The main reason to go to Dalian is the beaches and scenic seashore. However, soccer fans, shoppers, fish lovers, and those who just want a nice place to hang out will find Dalian an attractive destination.
