Interview with Dan Kennedy
Let me share excerpt in an interview with Dan Kennedy. Let's get to know more about this internet marketing guru - the awardee of the 2006-2007 Internet Marketer of the Year.
On business, on internet:
"I like to point it out that it is my intention, that a lot of people get confused and think that the internet is a business rather than a media. People will describe themselves as being in the internet marketing business. You're only in the internet marketing business if you are selling server space. It's not a business at all. It's a media just as the newspaper or the television or direct mail. This is a media and so offline/online - the differences in the principles or strategies. That should govern on the new ones, not big."
On using media:
"As you discover, and although I know more than I live in the online, for the most part especially in the information marketing field, what we do online and what we do offline is not only fully integrated but it's a large weight, the same to direct it into quest. So, information marketing which is actually a business is a coined name to describe, kind of a hybrid collection of types of businesses. It includes everything from solo or monotop operators. It includes speakers, consultants, life coaches, business coaches, authors, seminar promoters, newsletter publishers and for the most are producers of how-to products both in paper and in digital form. And information marketers tend to use every media imaginable - from Myspace and YouTubes, and their own websites and good old-fashioned snail mail and print ads and TV and radio. And the most successful information marketers, literally, use them all."
His 30 years experience in information marketing:
"When I started in information marketing, fundamentally, it was a subset of the mail order business, a term not used much anymore. I started in information marketing pre-internet, pre-fax, pre-voice broadcast. Teleseminars were cumbersome and complicated. Teleconferencing was not readily available or affordable. And so, we were doing print ads and direct mail. We drove that business by seminars, again acquiring customers largely through manual labor and plugging them into various products and do seminars and back end of no ordinary sophisticated as today. My transition from transactional businesses to membership continuity businesses, thereby, not just creating customers but creating customers for life. The newsletter which is into several sorts of reincarnations but the main newsletters used in today may be as marketing newsletter became the foundation of that business. And it may be a millionaire, and some, by the time I sold them to Bill, Glazer-Kennedy Inner Circle. And so now, I have an ongoing relationship with the business that provides content. I provide marketing advice.
The information marketing business is really a lifestyle. It is really a business of great options. On the other hand, it can be doing like what we call, we big pay day events, special seminars, and events. And that brings you face to face with them. You can be traveling if you like to travel. They have coaching groups in five different places, and be face to face with them intimately. You can focus; you can weight the business to offline, weight the business to online. Totally integrated; you can work a little, you can work a lot."
