Dance Through The Decades - The 20's
68
The Roaring 20's was the start of the Swing Era and new dance styles. It was an era that bought us the power of women and booze and nightclubs and SpeakEasy's It was an era that would be one of it's own with Jazz, Big Bands and the famous Ballroom dances that we have today in competitions as well a dance clubs. The Foxtrot,Tango and The Waltz were born as well as The Charleston, The Balimore and Jitterbug. The Lindy Hop, named after Charles Lindburgh, was a popular basic dance step that had many variations upon it including the Charleston. Everyone was hopping on the dance floor. This was the era when the upper body started moving in dance. In many ways it was a release from the pressures and strain the war had taken.
The Charleston was later replaced by the Black Bottom which orginated in New Orleans. Later this was replaced by The Lindy Hop.
The Shimmy was brought on by the Haitians and the voodoo as it entailed the shaking of the upper body and the hips. It was danced by celebrities such as Gilda Gray, Mae West and used in the Zeigfield Follies.
Many other dances that were in the era were:The Castle Walk, Camel Walk, Bunny Hop, Quick Step and Turkey Trot. Square Dancing became a big hit that was popularized by Henry Ford.
You can learn how to do some of these dances below on the various videos that I have included here.
The first two videos are a sampling of what they did and how they lived in that era. Don't be too shocked at some of the things that they did back then. What the kids are doing today is really not as bad as what they were doing back then.

While researching this information, we have nothing to complain about on what the youth do today--not one thing!!
Ahh the roaring 20s! I too have seen some of these dances in movies - I must say they really knew how to have fun Great Depression or not! Thanks for this nostalgic to one of history's swingiest periods! I'm getting jiggy with it! :D
This was pre-Great Depression. The Depression started in 1929 and that will be my next hub--the 30's Dance.
I still see some couples dancing these dances. They are great to watch!
What an interesting and informative HUB! I will have to come back and take the full dance course! :D
Lady Guinevere I love dance so this was a great hub, I can only imagine the types of things that were done back in the 20s sounds like great fun to me. Thanks for sharing.
I've seen that tap dance & baltimore in a couple of old movies. Loved it.
Hi Lady Guin,
I must admit I have not lived in this era or experienced it in my party life but I have seen some in the movies. Ilike the moves.
Nice.
"The Sting" is one of the movies this erea is depicted in. Robert Redord is in that one.
Something happened to the messages here.
I said that I only can dance those dances in my imagination too and the I like to watch people dance these dances on the dance floor. This was in response to Sheena's comment that she can only do these in her imagination.
I love the Charleston music and dance it looks like a lot of fun!
This hub is giving me an idea for a themed party ;-)
PBS has the Big Band Era Music on tonight!!

Yes, I've seen some films from the 20's and wondered how they got away with it! We tend to think that everyone in the "olden days" was a prude, but that's not so at all. Between the Victorian era and the wartime backlash, things got thoroughly licentious for a while!
