Dance of the spirits, the Aurora
71Aurorea are phenomenal masterpieces created by mother nature herself. Over the years many explanations and theories have been passed around about what the Aurora is, how it appears and why it appears.
From religious theories to scientifically explanations that have evolved over the years; experts have come to a conclusion on what the Aurora Borealis and Austrails is.
Dance of the Spirits
Called the 'Dance of the Spirits' by the Cree people the Aurora has been known by many different names throughout time by hundreds of different cultures.
Mostly depicted as spirits and ancestors dancing through the skys; many believe that its a sign that the spirits of their loved ones are still close, watching over them always.
The Inuit people of Alaska tell a traditional tale of the "shadows within the display are relatives and friends who have gone to the sky and march along or dance to remind the living people of their presence" It is also said that dogs howl at the sound of the Aurora as they recognize their companions within the lights.
The Science Behind The Aurora
Over time many scientists have provided us with theories to explain this beautiful phenomena. Thanks to NASA and our better of knowledge of space and the earth, we now understand what causes the Aurora and.
This clip from BBC 4's show The Sky at Night shows an Aurora in real time, captured on camera; the presenters also help to explain how they occur.
The Sky At Night - BBC Four Clip
An interaction between solar winds and the Earths magnetic fields is what causes Aurorae; a collision between charged particles from the Earths magnetosphere and Upper Atmosphere. The particles originate from the sun and arrive in the vicinity of Earth in solar wind. The now present collisions in our Earths atmosphere cause the energy from the electrically excited particles to be converted into visible light.
Aurorae vary from reds, to greens; though most commonly being green. Molecular nitrogen in the earths atmosphere causes low-level reds and very high blues and violets to be visible, while ionic nitrogen produces the greens and natural helium gives us the purples.
This may not sound like English to some, but there is no easy way to the science behind an Aurora.
Aurora from Space
What a view...
Also visible from space, NASA international space station has a great view of our auroras, showing them clearly across a huge stretch of our sky; looking just as stunning from space as they do from Earth.
They have made these satellite images to show us how the aurora occurs around the Earths magnetic poles.
Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Neptune, Uranus and Mars have also displayed aurora's, visible through our Hubble Space Telescope.
Aurorae are not something you will see all over the world. Most commonly seen in the Arctic regions; Alaska and the Antarctica, they are particularly seen across the northern hemisphere, these are known as the Aurora Borealis or the northern lights. In the southern hemisphere; where they can be seen in South America, Antarctica and Australasia, these are known as the Aurora Australis or the southern lights. Every 200 years or so they can be viewed from the equator, but don't get your hopes up because the occurrence is more than rare!
So in conclusion...
that's how we now explain the beautiful, fascinating and breathtaking phenomena that is a spectacular show provided by nature and space; combined into a perfect and unlimited masterpiece that will never cease to attract the eyes and adoration of every one that gets to see an Aurora

Love the pictures. Would be great to see the Aurora sometime - sadly cold, snow, and ice are not my friends.
Awesome assortment of photos! Kobys comment made me laugh
