Another Dallas area city adopts technology to stop tailgaters!
Ah, tailgating! There are two kinds. The first type usually involves safely parked vehicles, BBQ grills, coolers full of beer and a great time had by all! The second type is a completely different experience involving some jerk who just has to drive right up your butt on the highway!
If you're like me, being tailgated is one of the biggest pet-peeves you encounter while driving. You're going along, minding your own business, enjoying your Cher CD, when all of a sudden you notice your review mirror is full of some idiot's front grill! They're so close you can't even see their front tires on the road!
Now what to do? After 22 years of driving, I've learned to let a lot of things roll off my back. Especially in this new age of "extreme road rage", you don't wanna pick a fight on the highway! However, if you are being tailgated, you are driving in a dangerous situation and you need to get out of it ASAP!
If you can move over, move over! If it doesn't prevent you from being able to make your next exit ramp or merge, go ahead and change lanes to let the jerk go on ahead. You may be thinking, "Well, HE could've moved over himself and went on ahead! Why should I move??" Well, even though he could've moved, he wasn't going to, was he? And you just want the jerk out from behind you, right? Don't let it hurt your ego to move and let him pass. He may be all proud of himself for "intimidating you out of HIS way!!" Actually all you have done is help out a lesser form of human with a much lower IQ than yours.
Anyway, in five minutes you'll be back in your original lane enjoying your Cher CD again and have forgotten about the whole thing!
If you can't move over... If you can't move, you must be close to your exit or merge. You're only going to be in this situation for another minute or so! What I hate is when a tailgater takes the same exit right behind me! Then you just can't win! When that happens, you're usually back into a city driving situation and there is no longer a problem after you get through the light and head your different ways. See ya!
What NOT to do! DO NOT tap your brakes in front of a tailgater as a "warning" to them. They already know what they're doing and this will just encourage them because then they know they're annoying you! Don't "gesture" at them or otherwise retaliate. Always do what you can to avoid a road rage situation!
Fortunately, area cities are adopting new technology to STOP tailgaters! The city of Grand Prairie adopted new technology enabling them to be able to measure the driving distance between vehicles and cite tailgaters. I think it was last year they did this. Now the city of Rowlett has adopted the same technology! Hopefully more towns will adopt this technology and put a stop to this annoying and unsafe driving practice!
