Faeries and Faery Gardens

A faery is a small, supernatural creature which dwells in a magickal place. Folklore faeries are usually human in form, but are known to disguise themselves well when the necessity arises. There is a wide variety of earth spirits, from elves and gnomes of the deep forest, to the pixies and faeries of flower gardens and meadow lands. Undines, nymphs and sprites are water creatures and sylphs are air spirits.

Faeries live in their own enchanted Realm but have also been sighted among the flowers, woodlands, hills and streams, sometimes riding on their faery steeds or flitting from flower to flower. When faeries gather together to sing and dance, you might find a fairy ring of toadstools or mushrooms after they have left.

In folklore, faeries are mainly understood as being charitable to humans. They are playful creatures however, and love to play tricks on we mere mortals. They must be spoken well of and treated with respect, or you may provoke their anger. Folklore speaks of leaving small trinkets as gifts to faeries, such as small beads and dainty deserts, to gain their favour. Faeries love all things glittery.

So, why not create a faery garden for these little folk? Constructing a faery garden that will attract faeries and their winged friends is easy and doesn’t take up a lot of space. You can plan a traditional garden in the yard, a row of flowers along a garden wall or plant your faery garden in an old, shallow, stone sink.

Faeries and butterflies alike, love brightly coloured flowers with nectar. They seem to prefer the ‘cottage style’ garden with a wide range of different flowers to choose from. It is not important for a faery garden to be neat and tidy as the little people and butterflies will find shelter in a hollow stump or an upturned clay pot on cold, rainy days. Faeries enjoy sunning their little wings, so it is good to place flat sunning stones among the plants. A sunny spot, protected from the wind will make a nice sanctuary for faeries and butterflies.

A combination of wild flowers, native grasses and greenhouse flowers will help to keep your garden or patio pots lovely throughout the year and if you are planning a patio garden, use several different sizes and heights of pots grouped together. When watering your fairy garden, you’ll find soaking from the bottom better, as sprinklers will wash off the nectar that fairies and butterflies love!

A shallow saucer with a sunning rock in the middle can serve as a bird bath for visiting bird friends in your faery garden but if you prefer, you can use a traditional bird bath or the bottom saucer from a large flower pot. It is also important not to use insecticides! The natural approach is so much better.

Faeries love a wide range of flowers, and choosing from the following list will create a beautiful faery garden which will become a regular meeting place for faeries, butterflies, bees and birds.

Choose from: Foxglove, Ferns, Rose, Queen Ann's Lace, Pansies, Peonies, Lily of the Valley, Coralbells, Violet, Lilac, Four-o'clock, Nasturtium, Snapdragons, Shasta Daisy, Poppy, Hollyhock, Pinks, Baby's Breath, Butterfly Bush, Purple Coneflower, Columbine, Four O'Clock, Bachelors Button, Forget-me-not, Purple Coneflower, Thyme, Heather, Buttercup, Primrose, Periwinkle, Bluebell, Anemone, Snowdrops, Sweet Woodruff

In the light of the moon; a soft breeze blowing through the trees and flowers, stay very quiet and cautious, for you may witness the faeries laughing and dancing. You may have seen the circles they leave in the grass from their joyful dancing but do not go in search of the faery dance alone, for their magick is truly powerful. The enchantment of fairy music and laughter is well known to draw humans toward the Faery Ring, and should you join in the merriment of the dancing by stepping into their ring you may be led forever into the world of Faerie. The Faery Dance may seem to last only a short while… a few minutes, an hour or two, or a whole night… but in reality, you’ll find the dance could have lasted seven years by our time and perhaps even longer. Many moons will come and go without you being aware of their passing. The enchantment of the faery music and dance is overpoweringly beautiful as are the the little people themselves, so it is perhaps best to enjoy the presence of faeries without actually joining them.

To make them feel welcome, plant a few of the faeries’ favourite herbs, and add some natural building materials such as small rocks, twigs or shells for them to make their home. All you have to do after that is simple ... just sit back and believe.
