How a file is store on a hard disk
To better understand file recovery of deleted files, let us take a look at how files are stored on your hard disk or hard drive. When you create a file, for example, when you save the Word document that you have been typing, the Operating System stores your document on a data location on your hard drive. It then records on a disk directory the filename of your document which you provided when you saved your document. Along with the filename it also record the location of file, so that later on, when load the document by opening fhe using the Word program, it knows where to get file. File storage is really that simple, the OS saves the filename and the location of the file. Although it also saves a lot other information like the date of creation, date of last access, and many other important information, we are simply interested with filename and the location for our discussion on recovering files.

How a file is deleted
When a file is deleted, the contents of the file is not actually deleted. The operating system simply marks the file as deleted. And since it is already mark as deleted, you cannot see or access the file unless you undelete it first.
How to recover or undelete a file
Unfortunately, the operating system does not usually provide a way of undeleting files. If you want to undelete a file, you need third party softwares for the purpose. One of such software is UndeletePlus.
