I am always amazed that people will lose weight, buy new clothes, get a new haircut/hairstyle, and be on their best behavior to attract a new love interest, or even impress a blind date, but often those same people will do very little to revitalize and maintain the relationship they are in. Simply stated, before declaring your current relationship over or cheating on your partner, remember what it felt like when you were dating and try to rekindle those old flames.
With the hectic lives that many of us lead, it is not always easy to keep romance alive or to be in love everyday. But, it is easy to spend a minute or two each day to remember and be grateful for the good things in your life and your relationship. Learn to show appreciation. If your partner works hard to keep a roof over your heads and food on the table, then let your partner know that his/her efforts are appreciated. Don't take a clean house and meals for granted. Learn to say "thank you" through your words and actions. Is your mate a good parent, a good person and/or a good friend? Then applaud his or her efforts.
None of us is perfect, so it is very easy to zero in and point out your mate's shortcomings. But, what about the good things? Why did you begin a relationship with this person? What qualities attracted you to them? The next time you speak to your partner, take a second to ask yourself - am I saying something that is positive, or am I nagging or saying something that is belittling or demeaning? I frequently hear people speak in harsh tones to their mate, only to turn to a stranger and smile and be polite.
Show your partner that you care in small ways. Cook their favorite dish. Lend a sympathetic ear and allow them to "vent" when they've had a bad day. Watch a movie with them of their choosing, even if you think its too much of a "chick flick" or has too many car crashes or things getting blown up. Buy or make their favorite dessert. Dress up and go out on a real date - let them know that you enjoy their company. One can find warmth and comfort in simple things, like hugs and cuddling. To spice up your love life and have a little romantic fun, there are even love coupons. Use your imagination. You don't have to spend a lot of money to let someone know that you care. One day a co-worker was having a very hectic day, and she was unable to take a break or eat lunch until late afternoon. When she was finally able to sit down with her lunch, she found a note from her partner, that was tucked in with her sandwich, that read, "You are all I need." The note cost nothing, but its positive impact was great.
No one wants to be taken for granted. Make sure your partner knows he or she is loved and respected and that their efforts are appreciated. Make your mate feel special. The results can be amazing.
