When we talk about dating on the Internet we don't actually mean what it says. Internet dating is in reality being introduced to potential partners online. How you proceed from that intial introduction is entirely up to you.

Many of those who are unfamiliar with dating sites consider them to be slightly seedy and full of dubious characters who have evil motives or are simply after sexual encounters. To enable everyone to find out some basic information about other members, each person who registers on the dating site will be expected to fill out a profile which describes them and you usually get to choose the age ranges and types of people you would be interested to learn more about.

The online dating profile may be very simple but are often very comprehensive and these can be a little intimidating when you first sign up and are required to fill out all the details. Often you can put some basic details in and fill out the rest later when you have a better understanding of the sorts of things people would like to know about you.

All profiles on all online dating sites will include the basic details of age, height and weight. Sometimes they are very specific but more often they are broad ranges that you fit into so for example, height ranges might be 5 feet to 5 feet 2 inches or 5 foot 8 to six foot tall.

You are usually asked things like eye color, hair color and body shape which is usually something like small, medium or large though there may be several more categories as well as these.

Next we come to the description part of the profile. This is your opportunity to describe yourself and write anything about you in your own words. Sometimes these descriptions are brief but some people write a huge amount about themselves and their lifestyle, their hopes an aspirations for the future and what they would like in a potential partner.

You are usually expected to write a minimum of about 100 words so when you first sign up you can just write a brief summary of yourself and come back to it later when you have a better idea of the sorts of thing you might write in your profile description.

Dating site profile writing is something of an art and some people find it a very easy thing to do while others find it more difficult but if you find it difficult it may be best to just edit and add to it over a period of time.

People who have never tried Internet dating may be scare of the online dating risks and it is true there are some risks but so long as you are sensible and cautious those risks should be no greater than if you met someone in a bar, at a club or even at a business function.

The important thing to keep in mind when you are doing online dating is that people may not be everything they appear to be. It would be quite possible for a twenty year old male to portray himself as a fifty year old woman. That is an extreme example of what is possible but it also means that a sixty year old man could portray himself as a forty year old man and might publish pictures of himself on his profile that were taken twenty years ago. It can happen and it does happen but the majority of people are more honest and straightforward than that.

You just need to be cautious about what people say. Most decietful people will make mistakes in what they say when you exchange messages that may make you think something doesn't appear quite right. It could be a perfectly innocent mistake or it could be an intentional lie. You should take your time and get to know the person you are chatting with and never allow yourself to be pressured into doing anything you are uncomfortable with.

Most people are honest and genuine and sadly a few liars and cheats have spoiled the image of online dating but cheats and liars are the same whether they are online or people you meet in real life. Just take your time getting to know them and if you do get to meet take a few sensible precautions such as meeting in public places and make sure someone knows where you are and who you are meeting.

There is no doubt that dating on the internet has enabled thousands of people to meet and develop relationships that they never would have had without the internet or dating websites.

Online dating sites give you the opportunity to get to know people who you would never have met in normal life so it opens up all sorts of opportunities for all single people.

Many divorced people find it has been a lifeline for them which enables them to chat to people who have been through similar heart breaking experiences and enabled them to meet people. Meeting new people is always difficult but becomes more difficult as you get older with few places where you might just bump into new, potential partners.

Using online dating sites to meet new people gives you an opportunity to get introduced to someone who could turn out to be very special.
