Daughters or Sons

Perspective and Age
An old man saw me with my two daughters and said to me, "Are you going to have more children to have a son?" I replied, "We may have more kids, but I like having daughters and I'd be happy with a third daughter." He said, "Good."
I said, "Why did you say good?"
He said, "When I was young, all I wanted was a son to carry on my name, but I had four daughters. Now that I'm old it's much better to have daughters. They take care of you."

Oh, sons take care of their parents, too. My mother-in-law used to say, "Don't fill up your backyard with boys tryhing to have a daughter." We had six sons. As I have become older, I see less importance on the gender of your children. There are cultural ideas expressed by saying like "A son is a son until he takes a wife. A daughter is a daughter all of her life." I did not raise my sons to subscribe to that. They are all adults, and my wife and I feel connected to all of them. Children are a gift. Son or daughter . . . it doesn't matter.
Great hub, Paul. I raised two stepsons and a daughter. I gotta admit, had it not been for her mom, the poor little girl wouldn't have had any discipline! You have beautiful children. Great hub.
As the eldest of 4 myself, there's certainly a difference between the girls & the boys! We're all grown and my mom is gone, but you can bet it takes alot to raise any of them!
Have any of you read the new report by Dr. Janet Rose? It's a pdf called "The 7 Secrets of Parenting Girls" and is really useful. You can download it for FREE at http://parentinggirls.com
