Manila is the center of the Philippine Islands. Davao, however, is the largest city in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. Unlike Cebu and Manila, the nation’s other major metropolis, Davao is considered quite safe and friendly. Like the other cities in the Philippines, it is cheapest to get around via jeepney. However, taxis in Davao are not much more expensive.

Though the island of Mindanao has been the scene of unrest between the local Muslim population and the national government, Davao is a reasonably safe location. Still, it is best to check the U.S. State Department website to get the latest news and info about the Philippines. Unfortunately, the past 20-30 years have seen a lot of unrest in the region. Mindanao is populated by many of the Philippines Muslim minority. Elements of this part of Philippine society are at odds with the government. On the whole, however, Davao is a welcoming and colorful city.

Davao is a sort of Mecca for Filipinos from the outlying islands. As one of the country’s largest cities, Davao offers economic opportunities that cannot be found outside Cebu or Manila. For this reason, Davao is a bit of a melting pot. Many of the Philippines’ innumerable ethnicities are represented in Davao.

It is easiest to reach Davao via air. Bangoy International Airport receives regular flights from Manila and Cebu. While Davao is decidedly less cosmopolitan than Manila, it has its share of commercialization. New City Commercial Center is a respectable mall, with department stores, food courts, and a cinema.

The unofficial national sport of the Philippines is pool. Davao’s malls have plush, air-conditioned halls, while open air facilities are found throughout the city. Beware of hustlers. Any major city in the Philippines is a paradise for nine-ball lovers.

Davao has good seafood, though it is known amongst domestic travelers for its tropical fruits. Pungent durian and sour citrus are local favorites. Barbecued meat is another local favorite. Restaurants in most commercial areas serve decent fare. There are numerous fast-food joints in malls and along the street. These offer familiar but unexciting fare. Rizal Street has the highest concentration of restaurants serving international cuisine.

Nearby the city, Pearl Farm Beach Resort provides a beach setting with a reasonably tranquil atmosphere. This is a favorite of domestic tourists.

Davao has all the typical trapping s of a major Philippine city. However, the unique geography of the city and the colorful population make this the number one destination of travelers visiting the southern Philippines.
