Early Life
Born David Eric Grohl on January 14, 1969 in Warren, Ohio, Dave Grohl has been in two hugely successful rock bands and has established a name for himself as a musician and songwriter. Though in the 1990s he started out as a drummer in punk rock band Scream and more popular grunge group Nirvana, Grohl has since been the frontman and guitarist for the Foo Fighters.
Unaffected by his parents divorce at the age of six, Grohl was raised with his sister by their mother. He formed his first "band" at the age of ten with him on a one-string guitar and his friend banging on pots and pans. He generally wrote songs about his dog and friends and recorded them on his boom box. Grohl generally did not enjoy lessons and taught himself how to play guitar while playing in local cover bands. As a freshman in high school, Grohl was vice president of his student body and performed punk rock songs over the school intercom. During his junior year Grohl was in a band called Freak Baby. It was during his time in Freak Baby that Grohl taught himself to play the drums after they kicked out their drummer. He taught himself by banging on items in his bedroom and by mimicking Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. At the age of seventeen Grohl dropped out of high school and joined the Washington DC band Scream as their drummer.
Nirvana
It was touring with Scream where Grohl met Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. After the sudden breakup of the band, Grohl joined Nirvana with Cobain and Novoselic. Nirvana had already released their debut album Bleach and was picked up by major record label DGC Records. After recording Nevermind Nirvana was touring and had become a worldwide success. Grohl was feeling as though he was not contributing to the band creatively and released a solo cassette Pocketwatch. As Nirvana grew more and more popular Grohl's creative inputs increased and Grohl was grateful of the positive feedback from his band members.
Before touring Europe in 1994, Nirvana was scheduled to record some songs in Seattle. Cobain was absent during most of the time which allowed Grohl to record some songs which would later be future Foo Fighter songs including "Big Me", and "February Stars". When Cobain finally arrived on the last day of schedule studio time Nirvana recorded "You Know You're Right" which would be the last song recorded by the band as Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April of 1994.
Foo Fighters
With the end of Nirvana, Grohl did not know what would come of his career and life. After having random gigs with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam as their drummer, Grohl returned to his guitar roots and formed the Foo Fighters with former Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear, and two members of the band Sunny Day Real Estate, William Goldsmith (drums) and Nate Mendel (bass). The Foo Fighters released their debut album in July of 1995. By July of 1997 with the release of The Colour and Shape, which included hits such as "Everlong" and "My Hero", the Foo Fighters were stapled as a great rock band.
Overall Success
The Foo Fighters have continued to release monster hits with the latest 2007 release Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace winning Best rock Album at the 2008 Grammys. On top of having a successful career in two huge rock bands and being known for his musical talents on both the drums and guitar, Dave Grohl has also succeeded to have a successful personal life being married since 2003 and a father since 2006.
