David Byrne at Bonnaroo...
55David Byrne... GEniUS!!!
I was thinking today just how much The Talking Heads have been apart of my life. When I first heard them I was pretty young, around 11 and I liked them instantly! The music! The Lyrics! The Singer! I read about David Byrne here and there and then started really listening to the songs that I heard. Over and Over, I couldn't get enough. Then as I got older and I became rebellious. I rebelled against ME! I wanted to be opposite of what I was, I guess those teenage years are nuts for everyone! Every one has different stories to tell about those years... I guess, like I said I rebelled, mostly against myself! Crazy! And rebelling against myself meant forgetting (but not really) about David Byrne.
I remember being in Junior Hgh and loving everything I heard and read about the Talking Heads. After this is when I became a teenager, you realize... So other music came and went into my life. I Latched onto different crazes, music, styles and even dances and fashion brought on by music. By that I mean I was WAY into Nirvana. They were a way of life for me. It helped shape me as a young adult in the music world.
Then one random day, I believe I was 18, out of High School and on my own. I don't remember where I was but on the radio was a Talking Heads mini-marathon. I fell again for the sweet sounds of this band.
Now fast forward to me,at age 21(I think..) I am hanging out in Jackson, where I "grew up", where I became the me that we all know and love! I meet 2 people who love music, like I love music. They deeply feel lyrics, and the soul behind the songs that people belt out to us. These 2 new friends are the reason why I haven't stopped listening to and loving The Talking Heads and David Byrne for a consecutive 10, almost 11 years. If they are reading, I hope they recognize that I am talking about them! Andy and Tony, Cheers to you! I really like going back in my mind and thinking about all the great conversations about music I have had with these two. Andy has taught me so much about music, he probably hasn't realized it all. In fact I know he doesn't know, at all. He is very modest in his knowledge of music. Again he was a guiding force behind me discovering this talented group of musicians.
I began listening to Widespread Panic at this age as well and this also made me dig deeper into David Byrne's musical career. I was at a Panic show and they played a David Byrne song (Heaven), one of my favorite's. Widespread Panic has a way with this song, to say the least!
So I also have to thank WP for my re-awakening to the realm of David. He is amazing! And now, since I have a huge attraction to men with gray hair, well I like looking at him too....Great eye candy and an amazing musician... can it get any better?
I look at davidbyrne.com and always go away happy. Blogs and stories, and music. It's great to think that he is so busy but he can still find time to connect like this. He is all over the world, always posting wonderful stories and pictures from amazing places. I would love to know the man behind the music. He seems so interesting and very idealistic.
I have since discovered more and more youtube videos on him and the Talking Heads. Needless to say I am overloading my Facebook profile with these. I don't think it's a bad thing to be "addicted" to....
I can't wait for his performance at Bonnaroo. I have fun at this weird, sometimes too "mainstream" for me festival. But I am going again this year and my main reason for the trek to Tennesse from Oregon is Mr. Byrne! I usually look forward to Wideapread and their life-changing sets at Bonnaroo, not this year, I am focused on something new... Plus no Panic(as of yet) at Bonnaroo this year. Oh well, I see them whenever the time is right, it's like a family reunion every time I set foot into a WP show.
Enough for now, I am sleepy and need to hear some tunes. I wonder what I will be listening to?

I was lucky enough to see Talking Heads on their last tour before the break-up. I have seen David Byrne several times since.
Always a great show.
