David's special Christmas clothes
50It was the last day at daycare before Christmas 2004. I let my 3 year old son David chose the clothes he wore and I would help him get dressed. He decided to wear his favorite outfit - long sleeve camouflage shirt, camouflage pants, tan socks and camouflage sneakers. I asked him if he wanted to wear something with Christmas colors, but he said no.
We arrived at daycare and all the teachers were dressed in red and green. A lot of the children were also dressed in holiday colors. A teacher remarked at how beautiful a little girl looked in her fancy Christmas dress. Then she looked at David and said that he looked like a little soldier and went back to cutting out crafts for the kids.
An idea suddenly flashed in my head. I told the teacher that David was dressed in camouflage in honor of all our military troops who could not be home for the holidays.
She suddenly stopped what she was doing, looked at me and then looked at David. With tears in her eyes she said that she thought that was the sweetest thing she'd ever heard. Then she asked if we had anybody overseas. I told her no, but that David's Daddy has served in the Navy and both of David's Grandfathers had served in the Army, so we had a special place in our hearts for our brave soldiers.
I saw her in a local store recently and she told me that she remembered that day as if it was yesterday. I guess it made quite an impression on her!
