Legion
Mar 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
First I want to point out that Jesus took His disciples with Him to go to where this man was. They ran into a storm on the way and the disciples thought they were going to perish. (Mar 4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. Mar 4:38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? ) Jesus actually risked their lives to reach this one man who lived in the tombs where only the dead were.
Mar 5:3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
Now I have question for you the reader. Do you dwell with the living or with the dead? I want you to think about that question as you read this article.
Many had tried to help this man, but to no avail. They tried to chain him up so he wouldn't hurt himself, but he broke the chains. No man could bind him and he did what he pleased. Nothing could stop him. (Mar 5:4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. ) I haven't seen anyone who was so strong that chains couldn't hold him. I haven't heard of anyone who could break chains like this man did. This man just wasn't normal. He had the strength of many men because of the unclean spirits that possessed him.
Here Comes the king
Cutting Yourself
Mar 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
Can you imagine yourself being so miserable that you cried almost consistently and cut yourself with stones? What would cause a man to be so dissatisfied with himself that he did these things? Why couldn't anyone help him? These days we have psychiatrists we go to and doctors who give us medicine to keep our bodies weak and dull. Weak and lethargic from so many drugs that make us numb to what is real.
Mar 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
The man ran out to meet Jesus and fell before Him worshipping Him. How many times have we done this? The man saw Jesus a long way off but ran out to Him. We sometimes have to be urged to worship and then many times we fail to do so. We are full of pride and resentment at times that keeps us from worshipping Him as He deserves. This man had never met Jesus before. How did he realize who Jesus was? Something had to show the man who was coming. There was something about Jesus that struck a chord in him.
Mar 5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
The words this man said shows just how people are today. Those who are lost many times believe Jesus comes to torment them. They just don't understand. If they were to meet Jesus face to face, they would do the same thing that this man did. Why is it that so many would do the same thing? Is it because they really believe Jesus wants to torment them? I believe the issue goes much deeper than that.

Casting out Unclean Spirits
Mar 5:8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
Unclean spirits do dwell in men. All who are lost have unclean spirits inside them. A few years ago I was full of unclean spirits. I ran from God just as many do today. When a lost soul gets close to where God is, there is an uneasiness that comes upon him. The holiness and glory of God will always cause someone to do something. Some obey the voice of God while others run away. The lost do not know the voice of God like those who are saved. They will hear the voice, but do not recognize it. The voice they know best is the voice of unclean spirits. They obey this even though they have no idea who it really is.
Mar 5:15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
Sitting in his right mind with Jesus and the disciples around him. No longer possessed by unclean spirits and fully clothed. I can imagine the look on the faces of those who came to see this man who once was dead and dwelling among the dead things of this world now sitting with the King of kings and Lord of lords having a conversation. I can imagine Jesus sending the disciples to catch some fish to eat. It was such a glorious day. The angels in heaven rejoice over one soul coming to know Jesus.

More Questions for You
Now I have a few more questions for you the reader. Recall the question I asked in the beginning of this article. Did you answer it for yourself? Were you truthful to yourself? I know many hate to think about these questions I ask, but everyone needs to know the truth. If you don't want truth then I suggest you leave now. If you are lost and do not know Jesus as your Savior, you are dead in your sins. You dwell among the dead because there is no breath of life in you.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
The above verse is the most quoted verse of the Bible. It seems there isn't a person alive who doesn't know it. I am glad that so many people do know the verse of scripture. Many know the next scripture also. (Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.) Many want to read and memorize the good things of the Bible.
Although they know these two scriptures by heart, they refuse to memorize what comes after them.
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
When men love darkness more than light, they would rather stumble along with no knowledge of where they are going or what they are doing. The Bible itself proclaims that their works are evil. They may seem good to some, but to God they are pure evil. We can also see that they hate the light. Going back to the man of the tombs, he thought Jesus came to torment him. We can see a little more clearly why he thought so. The light of God is torment to Satan and his unclean spirits. Just to be around Jesus makes them feel torment and torture.
What about you my friend? Would you like to come out form the tombs and stop dwelling with the dead? Would you like to have life in Jesus? It isn't a hard thing to do. Jesus did the hard part for you. He took your sins to the cross. Jesus was so holy and righteous that death couldn't even take Him. He had to give Himself over to death. No sin was in Him nor come from Him at all but yet He became sin for you. Not only did He die for you, He also was raised from the dead.

Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
What keeps you from confessing your sins to Him? The Bible states that the word in in your mouth even. As I said it is an easy thing to do. Of course you can go on living with the dead. No one can force you to come to Jesus, but we can only speak the truth to you. It is time now to come and give your life to Him that you will have life more abundantly.

Thanks fore the read and comment Vladimir. I appreciate it very much.
These are some of my favorites Sir D:
Mar 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, - The guy had about 4000 demons (A roman legion had 4000+ soldiers) ... 4000 demons could not keep this man from worshiping Jesus. I LOVE that.
"clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid." ... wow the guy was cutting himself, homeless, naked etc. and they thought it was "normal" ... when he was clothed and in his right mind, that scared them.
Seems that some people prefer insanity to the manifest presense of God.
Thanks for the read and comment Bdazz. I appreciate it very much.
not a bad hub..
Thanks silly for the comment.
Sir Dent. thanks for the hub. I was reading in Ephesians today about being ALive in Christ - sometimes it's too easy to move back toward the living dead instead of embracing the abundant life - thank God he has ways to remind us who we are in his son Jesus
BDazzler. It is a pretty cool thought that even 4000 demns couldn't keep this man from worshipping Jesus
This is a wonderful hub! I praise God for walking in the newness of life.
Mar 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him.
Mar 5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
Even though this man was controlled by thousands of demonds, he, and all the demonds, recognized God for who He was. How many, I wonder, would miss Him if he walked right by us?
that is true Kris wonder how many of us would know it was him,,,,or if he was in trouble how many of us would help him since he would be a stranger...

SirDent,
Thank you for consistently sharing God’s Word. God’s promise is to bless His Word not mine or yours. Our opinions don’t matter. God’s Word, administered by the Holy Spirit sets men and women free.
Feelings come and feeling go and feelings are deceiving.
My warrant is the Word of God, naught else is worth believing.
I’ll trust in God’s unchanging Word till soul and body sever.
Till all earth shall pass away, God’s Word abides forever.
Thank you again for your faithfulness my dear brother. ~ eddie
