My mom says gas will reach $5 a gallon by summertime. That sucks.

What's a way to try to work against this crisis? Buy gas from the right sources. Why should we support companies

I got this information from an e-mail. Think about the implications.

"Gas rationing in the '80s worked, even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us!

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

  • Shell...........................205,742,000 barrels
  • Chevron/Texaco.........144,332,000 barrels

  • Exxon /Mobil...............130,082,000 barrels

  • Marathon/Speedway...117,740,000 barrels

  • Amoco..........................62,231,000 barrels

Citgo Gas comes from South America, from a dictator who hates Americans. Do the math at $30/barrel: these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (Oil is now $90-$95 a barrel.)

Here are some large companies that DO NOT import Middle Eastern oil:

  • Sunoco................0 barrels

  • Conoco................0 barrels

  • Sinclair.................0 barrels

  • BP/Phillips...........0 barrels

  • Hess....................0 barrels

  • ARC0...................0 barrels

  • Also: Pilot, Flying J, Love's, RaceTrac, Valero

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy, and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing."

This information may not be an instant end-all to high gas prices, but I think it's important to know where gas comes from and to know as much as possible about what we're buying because we're not happy with the way things are now. Understanding the forces behind high prices may be the first step to changing how things are.

People in Europe are highly amused by the panic that Americans get into over fuel prices. I have just done a calculation based on the average fuel price at UK petrol stations, and taking into account the need to convert litres into US gallons and pounds sterling into US dollars (current rate). This brings the equivalent price per US gallon to $8.16. If we had our fuel at $5.00 a gallon (US) we'd we whooping in the streets!

And guess what - life in the UK still goes on, we still queue up at the petrol stations, and we still drive our cars into cities and cause nice big gridlocks. And the average salary here is about two-thirds what it is in the US. So what on earth are you complaining about?

That is it! We are spoiled here and crying about it. That is why I say we have to JUST DEAL WITH IT.

A timely topic that is likely to get greater attention. At the pump we rarely think about how many millions of gallons are used on a regular basis.
