With the soaring default rate on both secured and unsecured debt, it's not surprising that both affected consumers and businesses are clamoring for free debt relief grants from the government. They see it as a way out of the problem and a way to get themselves through a tough patch. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees that it would be the best solution.

Find out how you can eliminate debt in as little as 12-36 months with good advice on debt consolidation.

There are federal government programs that are available. They aren't necessarily debt relief grants from the government, but they are helping individuals get personal debt relief. For example, individuals with federal student loans have several options available to them. They can get a forbearance that allows them to bring an overdue loan back to good standing. Lenders are usually very understanding about helping you get your loan current. You can also apply for a deferment on your loan. A deferment can be for unemployment or financial hardships. There are limits to how long you can defer your loan, but it's plenty of time to work through your temporary financial difficulty. Finally, you can apply for a free consolidation loan. This means that you can bring a loan current, even a defaulted loan, and start fresh.

There is talk currently about giving personal debt relief to homeowners and plans have been introduced, but the requirements seem fuzzy and difficult to understand. This means that the pool of people who can benefit from these debt relief grants from the government is not as large as it should be. While focused on homeowners, it ignores the need for personal debt relief for those with credit card debt.

In fact, in the coming months, the problem of individual credit debt could become a major issue. Free money isn't always a solution to economic problems, but hopefully the federal government can come up with some sort of plan to give genuine personal debt relief.

Find out about the different types of debt consolidation loan application - Refinance, Home Equity Loan, Unsecured Loans - to consolidate credit card debt even for people with bad credit.
