From Oriental to Modern Without the Shell Shock

Every room in my home reflects the different sides of my personality, but unlike my personality all the pieces of my home don't fit together. So I just took a few light covers and some area rugs and put the pieces of my puzzle together for good.

If you're like me, your personality has many different sides and it changes every day. So, you need a house that reflects your many shades of life so you can be comfortable every day and in every way.

One of my biggest problems with accommodating all the sides of my personality has been trying to make sure that the kitchen doesn't become an eyesore against the dining room-they do connect through an open door space-and that the dining room doesn't clash with the living room-they're separated by an invisible wall created partially by furniture.

Of course, then I have to worry about the hallway...it's dark and mysterious and romantic with the wall sconces and the Renaissance paintings-and immediately you are thrust into a modern oriental theme in the bedroom.

Lighting For Connecting Rooms

I have learned. And I'm happily ready to share with you how I make it happen in my home. The first thing I wanted to make happen was accommodating light that would gradually change the mood from one room and space to the next. The dining room, being in between the living room and the kitchen, has a dimmer switch, so I can change the lighting to suit my mood and the occasion, not to mention the natural sunlight that comes in as well through the large sliding glass doors.

But it's not only lighting. I have learned that the ceiling and the floor are the two major places that have to be cohesive from room to room to keep your home from battling itself and becoming nothing but an eyesore.

Flooring For Connecting Rooms

Of course, for the ceiling, I have the lights. But how can you accommodate cohesiveness on floors? It's as simple as purchasing area rugs. No, seriously. I've come to understand that it does no good to have the exact same flooring throughout your entire home to try to create cohesion-the silvery tan carpet just doesn't work in some of my rooms and dark cherry wood floors would never make the grade in my bathrooms or in my office.

But area rugs, especially plain colored area rugs, like light tan area rugs, blue rugs and red area rugs, tend to create a simpler sense of cohesion than anything else I could have done. This is because I can choose the common color from each room that connects and bring them together with a rug of that color.

Decorating Connecting Rooms

It really is that simple. My elegant dining room shares a solid black rug with my modern living room-this was different in the recent past, but I've realized a great many helpful hints and tricks since that have transformed my home into a walking path of peace...not one that stresses me out with every movement.

The simplest thing about making these changes to my home is that area rugs and light covers are inexpensive, long lasting and easy to replace additions to my home that don't have to be permanent.
