If you are expecting a baby, you are probably also in the process of decorating a baby nursery and planning where everything should go. This can be a lot of fun, but it can also be quite expensive. You will want to plan and shop smart so that you end up with a beautiful and fun baby nursery, without going overboard on the expenses.

Before you can start, what you will need to do is to give some thought to your overall baby nursery decor or theme. Many people like to choose a theme or even a specific character as the overall inspiration for decorating a baby nursery. This could be something basic like teddy bears or a garden theme, or something more specific to a particular character, such as Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse. Either way, deciding this first will make it much easier for you to plan the rest of your decorating efforts, since you will know what to search for, and what colors you want to coordinate with.

Of course, many people prefer not to go with a specific theme, and instead just decide upon a color scheme for the baby nursery. When choosing a color theme for a baby nursery, keep in mind that lighter colors tend to be more restful and soothing, which are often good choices for a baby's bedroom. Of course, you might also prefer the high energy and stimulation of brighter and cool style for the room. In the end, it is a personal decision. You can always combine these two color scheme methods by going with a more neutral or pastel color scheme for the walls and flooring, and then add bright splashes of color to the room with the baby nursery bedding, curtains, and other accessories in the room. After all, there really are no hard and fast rules when decorating baby nurseries… it is whatever you like the best, and whatever you think your baby would enjoy the most in the new nursery.

It is also a personal choice as to whether you want to decorate the baby nursery specifically for a boy or a girl. If you already know whether the baby will be a girl or a boy, you have the option of dressing up the nursery in a more specific fashion. Of course, not everybody likes the traditional "blue is for boys, pink is for girls" method of decorating, but there are some things that you can do with the room that can make it more specific to a boy or a girl, even if you do not choose the traditional pink and blue color schemes. Often, baby nursery bedding is frillier and more feminine when decorating with a baby girl in mind, as opposed to more of an emphasis on more solid and plain looking bedding for a boy. However, sometimes you do not know if the baby will be a boy or a girl, or you would just prefer to decorate the baby nursery in a more gender-neutral fashion. This can give the room more of a "clean slate" sort of look and feel, and makes it easy to personalize and accessorize more after the baby is born.

Once you decide on the overall color scheme and decorating ideas for the baby nursery, you still need to shop for baby nursery furniture. There is a wide variety of colors and styles of baby furniture available. You will find that you have many options from which to choose, even when just starting the process by checking out the available options for baby nursery cribs. You will also discover, when shopping for baby cribs and other baby furniture, that there is a wide variety of prices.

Some baby furniture can be quite expensive, especially considering the fact that a baby only stays small for such a short amount of time. You can help get the best value when shopping for baby furniture if you look for the styles that can convert as the baby grows. For example, choosing a baby crib that converts into a full size bed is a great idea. You will also want to make sure that any baby nursery furniture you buy is safe and sturdy, and will hold up well, especially if you plan, buy the convertible furniture, because you will be using it for a longer period of time.
