Working at Home

Having a home office can feel like a party-no commute, no boss, no one to tell you what to do but you. However, your home office should still be an office so instead of going makeshift; make your home office an office to be proud of.

If you work from home, then you know the importance of having a genuinely good looking and comfortable home office. If you have clients coming in and out of your home office, then it's even more important than if you're working alone out of your home. But getting a comfortable home office is different than making the rest of your home a comfort zone because you have to want to work while you're there as well. Here are some tips for creating a comfortable, professional home office.

Try to keep your work in a separate room

Having your home office in the middle of your living room is not the best idea-if you live in a tiny apartment and there's nothing you can do, just dream about the day when you'll have more than one bedroom-because, depending on the type of work you do, this can be a very messy area with tons of papers, books and journals floating around, as well as post it notes. Designating a particular room in the house for your home office can create a suitable work environment that's never far from home-it'll be the shortest commute you ever had.

Decorate it like you would an office

This is especially important if you have clients coming in and out because you need to have a professional façade for them. Not only that, but you are more likely to work hard during the day, if you have a professional desk, computer and office setup than if its next to your bed.

Make it feel like an office

When you're at home, sometimes it can be difficult to make a home office actually feel like a business office. But there are simple things you can do to make it seem like a different place. For instance, if you don't have area rugs around your home, you can add an area rug to the office space to make it seem different than the rest of the house. Additionally, a rug will give the room an added sense of class and a cleaner more professional look; especially if you choose the right rug. Take in to account the colors of the room already and opt for something that compliments rather than clashes. If your office is green like mine then a green oriental style rug will create a soothing ambiance.

Area rugs will also help keep the room cleaner and fresher to look at. And since you'll be spending 8 hours a day there, it's the best way to give yourself something to look forward to. Also, use different book shelves, window coverings, blinds and paint in your home office than you do in the rest of the house.

Try to choose a room that connects to a bathroom or is right next to a bathroom

If you have to walk very far to get to the restroom in your home office, chances are you will have a difficult time concentrating on your work since you'll always be going home to use the restroom.

Remember, the home office should function like a real office. It might not hurt to also bring in a mini fridge and microwave so you can avoid "going home" the whole day.

Good tips ... I like to watch tv while I work though! Haha. I still like to have a separate area where I can keep all my paperwork, files, printer, etc. But it's nice to have a laptop so I can work around the house too.
